Ok, on this quest of organization, I want to show you how to basically organize your home.?? So far, I have showed you how I am coming up with a filing system, Notebook system (courtesy of Alejandra Castillo), and MS Access.?? Next, I told you about organization?s children, planning and scheduling, and how you have to plan how to organize each room and schedule that time in without disrupting your other plans.? Last, I gave you tips on how to organize your clothes, have a wash-a-thon, and toss what you do not like, cannot wear, and donate gently worn clothes to thrift and consignment shops.? I forgot to add that any donations you give are tax write-offs as well.? Now we are going to turn to the hobby room and organize it.? If you have noticed, I do not go in order of importance, I skip around.? I do that so I do not get bored in one space.? Some people like to tackle everything in a room, then move on to the next room.? That is perfectly fine, as long as you are organizing.? My purpose is to give those of you who need a jumping off point.? At the end of this series (which if you notice I am not saying part 1, part 2, etc), I will give you tips on how to keep it up. Back to the hobby room.? You may not have what I call a traditional hobby room. ?Some people call it a craft room, scrapbook room, gun room, the fishing vault.? Any of these name serve this purpose. For some, you may not have a room at all, just one little corner.? I have two areas:? a room to hold products and in case I want to craft in there, while another area in my house I use to keep stuff I use often and my main crafting area.? I share this area with my home office.? When I move, my plan is to combine the two into one space, because I will be sharing my home with another person, a person who will not be taking up much apace at first, but as she grows, and may be taking on siblings, I need to have the room, and taking up two rooms will not cut it.? so I preparing for the future too. 1.????? One of the first things you want to do is plan your space.? Ask yourself these questions first, ?Am I happy with the space I have right now???? If not, find a good space that you and other members of your family can live with.? If you need to, have a family conference and ask a person if they mind if you take their space.? Rule #1:? Not a bedroom.? Sleeping and privacy before hobbies.? You do not want to kick a person out of a bedroom UNLESS you have a better place for them to sleep.? For instance, never kick a teen out of their bedroom, UNLESS you are willing to give them the basement, AND they can fix it up like they want to.? If you are willing, this is great and congrats on your new room.? If not, I am afraid you are stuck where you are at until they move out.? Here is an option:? the garage.? I have seen many spaces being made out of garages.? My parents turned a one car garage into a family room, then added on a two car garage in one the homes I used to live in. 2.????? ?This leads to the next question, ?What is your budget for this project?? Call budgeting one of those ?stepchildren? no one wants to talk about.? It must be done, or you may find yourself in the hole.? This does not have to be a big budget, and you may have all the stuff you need to organize, but you need to know that the money is there, ?just in case? you need it. 3.????? Location, location, location.?? Where are you going to put all of that stuff??? Stop right there.? Before you put away, you need to do the same thing as your clothes:? a.?????? Find everything.? In my case, I need to find all the paper, glue, embellishments, scrapbooks, chipboard, cartridges, stamps, ink, and so on that is related and needed for this space to function. b.????? Sort and purge.? Sort your items into like piles, and get rid of the ones you do not want, like or damaged.? In my case, I need to ask, ?Do I want this??? If so, put it in the pile where its family is.? If not, is it still good??? I can then donate it to a senior center, or sell it on Ebay or some other shop (online or physical location).? If it is within 30 days of buying it, you can always return it.? Check with store policy before buying it first always helps. c.?????? Find the necessary containers to place them in and put away.? This is where your money and the art of buying comes in.? Do not buy containers for the sake of buying them.? it defeats the purpose, and you may find yourself purging the containers.? Make sure you have a place to put the containers when filled. 4.????? Keep inventory.? This is where the filing and notebook system comes into play.? They help in two ways:? help you keep track of what you have and how many, and where you stashed it all.?? I have a pink binder from Staples I use for this purpose.? It is back up by a database I have on MS Excel and Access.? You do not have to go through great lengths like I did, but have some sort of system.? For paints and inks, there are worksheets from companies like Tim Holtz I can download, and make a swatch from.? If you are a train collector, I am sure there are similar sheets where you can get for the makes and models for your collectors.? Same for Stamp collectors (I should know this, because I used to collect stamps when I was little).? Make sure you do not have a complicated system.?? Well that is it for now.? These are some basic steps you need to have an organized hobby room.??
