Video: Thousands of flights canceled as storm advances

>>> one item as we work on our developing storm voc a bulary, to repeat, sandy is a post- tropical cyclone , but in the parlance of the northeast, it is a nor'easter, coming at the northeast in a direction opposite of which our weather normally comes. cool call it what you will, the flight cancellations now number some 14,000. and we have flight software here called flight tracker 24, the northeast here, what you see is the blue and green radar, you don't see the icons of jet aviation over this country for a very good reason. tom costello has more.

>> reporter: yeah, all of those planes have gotten out of harm's way. and we now have information to show you the hurricane force. so far, there have been nearly 14,000 flight cancellations as a result of hurricane sandy, of that, more than 7500 flights cancelled today. most affected is philadelphia, and the three new york city airports, and really also d.c. for tomorrow, nearly 5,000 flights already cancelled, and that number will surely go higher as the storm worsens overnight. airlines like delta airlines not planning on flights for cities from d.c. to new york, until they are sure of two things, brian, number one, that the airports are safe, that they're ready -- in other words, no water issues, no power issues. number two, the people who work at the airports can get their safely, usually by mass transit . so with all the cancelled flights, what are the airlines doing with the planes no longer in the air? they're parking them at airports across the nation, from cincinnati to los angeles , and when they're ready to fly again it won't take long to get them back in the air. but with few open seats in the system, working through back log will take some time, probably days or maybe even weeks.
