Libyans surrender weapons to military authorities

Hundreds of weapons held by former Libyan rebels who fought the security forces of the late Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi have been turned over to military authorities in response to a call by government in the wake of violent incidents in Bhengazi.
The earlier call by military authorities for civilians to surrender their arms after the fall of Gaddafi did not result in massive turnover until after the violent incident in Benghazi which killed the American ambassador and three of the US Embassy staff.

According to Army Col. Omran al-Warfali, hundreds came early for the turn over of their weapons to the authorities.

"Hundreds of citizens came since the early hours of this morning to handover their weapons from all segments of society, men and youth, women, and even children came to hand over bullets they found it in the streets," he told AP.

In the same AP report, "Moussa Omr, a former fighter who lives on the outskirts of Benghazi and who fought against Gadhafi, said it was time to turn over his weapon to the state."

"When I saw the announcement on television I came to Benghazi with my wife and son to hand over my weapon to the national army because I want to move from the stage of the revolution to state building," he said. "I trust the national army. They have been with us on the frontline and I know them one by one. I don't need this weapon after today, the militias have been expelled from Benghazi and the national army will protect us."

Libya's new government has been struggling to fight criminality as private armed groups continue to patrol the streets but often take the law into their own hands.

Estimates reveal there are at least 200,000 private citizens in Libya who are armed and government has been trying to entice them to surrender their weapons.

Members of the armed groups were offered jobs and money in exchange for their weapons but few have responded to the call by Libya's new leaders.

But recent developments have shown that armed groups have realized the pressing need for lasting peace in their communities.

Some armed group members have offered to join the military under the new regime after surrendering their weapons.

"Saad Bakar, head of a small brigade in Benghazi, handed over rifles and ammunition on Saturday, saying he was ready to disband his group," Reuters wrote.

"We were waiting until today to make sure that the weapons go to the right place," he said. "We want to join the army as individuals."

The organizers of the weapons collection initiative said the campaign will continue in key cities in order to further entice the armed groups to hand over their weapons, they plan to raffle off prizes to include cars at the end of weapons collection day.

Al-Qaida group withdraws from its last Somali bastion

The al-Qaida-allied al-Shebab militant group said it had left the city of Kismayo, seen above Friday, after it was attacked by a Kenya-Somalia force.

By NBC News wire serives

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Somalia's al-Shabab rebels withdrew from the southern Somali city of Kismayo overnight, the rebel group and residents said Saturday, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the militants' last bastion.

?We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayo at midnight,'' al-Shabab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters.

He threatened to strike back soon. ?The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter ?Kismayo which will soon turn into a battlefield,? he said.

African Union troops from Kenya, Uganda and Burundi have combined over the last 18 months to kick al-Shabab out of the Somali capital Mogadishu and take a series of smaller towns that the insurgents fled to.

Al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had earned money by collecting taxes on goods arriving at the Indian Ocean port, so the loss of the stronghold is a double blow to the armed fundamentalist group that began attacks in 2007 and went on to control all but a few blocks of the capital.

D-Day for al-Qaida in Somalia? Troops storm beaches at last stronghold

The assault is likely to send al-Shabab fighters underground. Hardcore fighters may unleash suicide bombs and ambushes but less dedicated fighters could melt back into their communities, further reducing al-Shabab's strength.

At an international one-day summit Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron said the world would "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia overcome terrorism, piracy and starvation. ITV's Lee Comley reports.?

Born in the USA, but now among Somalia's Islamist terrorists

The African Union force said that some al-Shabab fighters have already contacted military officials in recent days, saying they wanted to defect from al-Shabab.

Expert: War on terror at 'critical' point as al-Qaida looks to regroup in Africa

Speaking on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York Friday, Kenya's Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi called the entry of Kenyan forces into the Somali port "a significant victory."

"This is a major blow to them and we think it's positive for the region and for Somalia," he said.?

Swiss industrial firms weathering strong franc: UBS study

ZURICH (Reuters) - Export-oriented Swiss industrial companies have started to recover from the ill-effects of the strong Swiss franc and are doing better now than at the start of the year, a study showed, suggesting Switzerland may yet avoid a recession.

Large corporations were improving at a quicker pace than small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the survey by Swiss bank UBS found, with firms focused on the domestic market positioned best of all thanks to robust consumer demand.

Switzerland earns every second franc abroad, and the highly-valued currency has stifled exports, particularly to the euro zone. To prevent deflation and a recession, the central bank set a cap of 1.20 Swiss francs per euro a year ago.

"While a low-level turnaround may be evident in the industrial sector, where a growing number of companies are reporting improved figures, sectors focusing on the domestic market such as the construction and service sectors are benefiting from consistently high domestic demand," it said in a statement on Thursday.

"With only a few exceptions, the large companies posted better figures than the SMEs," it also said.

Domestic demand accounts for nearly 60 percent of annual output.

The machine and electrical (MEM) industry is one of the sectors particularly hit by the franc's strength against the euro. Some firms have threatened to move production abroad to lower costs.

The economy contracted in the second quarter, fuelling fears that Switzerland -- which for long seemed immune to the neighboring euro zone's woes -- might after all suffer a recession due to the strong franc.

And in a possible sign of more weakness in the third quarter, PMI manufacturing data posted its fifth contraction in a row in August.

The Swiss National Bank said earlier this month it expects growth of 1 percent this year.

Another sector of the Swiss economy to be hit is tourism, with hotels complaining of falling visitor numbers as holidaymakers choose cheaper destinations.

"The effects of the strong franc are still very evident in the tourism industry. However, the situation has stabilized at a low level," the UBS survey said.

Venturi announces 300HP, ?300K America all-terrain EV, coming in 2014

Image

If you feel the need to rapidly hit the great outdoors without despoiling it, Venturi just may have your ride -- provided you have about $400,000 to spare. The company just launched the America EV at the Paris Auto Show, packing a 300HP powerplant, 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and projected 200 mile range to go along with the breathtaking price tag. Venturi's touting the car as more than just a smooth pavement flyer though, saying that it has a go-anywhere attitude with its high stance, generous clearance and tough carbon-fiber chassis. Still, if you want to go fast, the car can hit a top speed of 120 mph, and once you've burned off all the volts, can be fast charged in four hours, or ten from a 230V socket. Despite its off-road gumption, the rear-driver has considerable competition for sports EV dollars -- and a smooth road to its 2014 availability target is no given.

Stock trade stagnant | SaigonMoney.com - The digital provider of ...

With little investor interest, the local market largely moved sideways again on Tuesday while liquidity failed to make any improvement. The VN-Index inched up 1.4 points, or 0.36%, from the day earlier to close at 391.77 due to some help from GAS and VNM.

The market opened several points higher and then hit the daily high of 394.06 points before dropping back again by the end of the morning session. In the afternoon, the market traded in a narrow range and closed just above Monday?s close.

Liquidity on the Hochiminh Stock Exchange remained pitiful even with a VND86 billion block trade of VIC. Ending the day, there were only 23.9 million shares worth VND442 billion traded, which was similar to Monday?s levels.

There were 93 advancers but the number of decliners was bigger, at 111. The stocks that went up to the ceiling prices numbered 27 while 41 stocks dropped to the floor prices.

Eximbank (EIB) continued to take the lead in terms of liquidity, rising 2% from the day earlier to VND14,800 per share with two million shares changing hands. Tan Tao Investment Industry Corporation (ITA), the second most actively traded stock, dropped 4.3% to VND4,400 on a volume of 994,000 shares.

Foreigners stayed on the selling side for the second day, offloading VND57.7 billion worth of shares. They accounted for 15% and 28.5% of the market?s buying and selling value respectively.

The Hanoi market dropped for the second straight session while turnover fell to VND137 billion. The HNX-Index lost 0.24 point, or 0.43%, against the previous session and ended the day at 56.22.

Only 58 stocks gained while 112 others lost, including 19 stocks going up to the ceiling prices and 34 stocks dropping to the floor prices. Foreigners accounted for 4.6% of the buying value and 4.9% of the selling value.

HCMC Securities Corp. (HSC) said the markets are drifting sideways for now but with a slight downwards bias.

Domestic trading volumes have been puffed up by some large put-through transactions in recent weeks, which means that normal market trading has dropped to levels not seen since this time last year, HSC commented.

?Underlying sentiment then is quite bearish and stocks are seen as cheap but for now there appears to be no compelling reason to buy them. This reflects the overall macroeconomic picture where despite the fact that we seem to be at the bottom of the cycle, a sputtering credit function means that hopes for a recovery have been postponed,? it added.

Internet Marketing for Start Ups Seminar Now Registering Businesses

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 26, 2012

Internet marketing is one area of business that many start ups must grasp before and after taking a business online for the first time. Some marketing concepts used in the offline world have not translated yet to online marketing campaigns. The Marketer?s Black Book team is presenting a proven marketing approach during its November 9th through 11th live event in Jacksonville, Florida. These successful business owners have been part of hundreds of online start ups and are teaching new and existing business owners how to successfully market products and services online. A direct sign up form is available here at this link.

News reports about the number of entrepreneurs starting online companies can be found in top financial magazines. Part of the data that is represented includes surveys of new start up companies. While many of these companies can secure the proper funding to create an online company, not all companies that launch products and services online are successful. Part of the data includes figures that can be depressing to new start ups that hope to bring innovative products and services to the online world. The new data released reveals that 90 percent of new online companies will fail between years one and three online.

Staying alive in search engines is becoming harder for content that is older than 90 days according to the Internet Marketing for Beginners website. Companies can develop attractive websites that utilize modern applications and still fail to produce content that is worthy of search engine indexing. Google has changed its approach to indexing content by integrating a Pagerank formula. This formula is an internal numbering system that Google applies to websites in an effort to judge the importance of content that is distributed from a website.

One of the methods that Marketer?s Black Book experts plan to teach at the November 9th live event in Jacksonville, FL is how to create and supply informative content that search engines will approve for pennies on the dollar.

?We come in contact with business owners, website owners and new entrepreneurs daily that have great products and services,? said Bernard Ablola, co-owner of Marketer?s Black Book and a former Microsoft AdCenter Analyst. ?Getting products and services in front of the people that buy them is much easier when you know expert Internet marketing techniques like we teach,? Ablola said.

New start ups, existing businesses and website owners that would like more information about building traffic and profits online could benefit from attending the Marketer?s Black Book Internet Marketing for Beginners live event. Early bird registration discounts are now being awarded to any person that signs up at this link before the cutoff period is announced.

About Marketer?s Black Book

The Marketer?s Black Book website was launched in 2010 as a free resource for Internet marketers and business owners to use to help grow web traffic online. In the two years since its launch, the Marketer?s Black Book website now receives thousands of visitors each week that are searching for new tips, tricks and techniques to help further a business, blog or other website online. The entire Marketer?s Black Book team speaks frequently at top technology and business seminars in the United States teaching entrepreneurs how to succeed online. Commentary ? How to get closer to your GSU without leaving your ...

Commentary by Maj. Austin Hood
23rd Space Operations Squadron Detachment 1 commander

8/27/2012-THULE AIR BASE, Greenland? The 50th Space Wing has 18 geographically separated units spanning the world and the better part of 7,900 dedicated professionals supporting those GSUs in delivering decisive global effects. Your outstanding GSU support is a result of strong working relationships. So how can you get closer to your GSU without leaving your desk? Communicate. Good communication is critical to developing, maintaining and improving those relationships.

The 23rd Space Operations Squadron Detachment 1 at Thule Air Base, Greenland, receives excellent GSU support from a variety of organizations but there is always room for improvement. I have never heard of a mission failing because the communication was too good. Obviously, nothing can replace a visit to places like Thule AB, but travel to a GSU is a limited resource. A great alternative is to maximize those lines of communication that we use every day.

For communication foundations, I defer to the article written by Lt. Col. Fred Taylor, then50th Space Communications Squadron commander, Improving Your Communications Will Help Develop High Performing Teams. To optimize communications, collaborative tools provide a content-rich environment to get your message across as well as receive much needed information from your mission partners at the GSUs.

When developing or utilizing a collaborative tool or process, consider a design centered on your customers experience. Industry information technology companies have capitalized on this approach to deliver tremendous capability to their customers.

Additionally, some GSUs, like Det. 1, are bandwidth challenged and thus are unable to make full use of heavy collaborative applications, a fact which may hinder relationships rather than help them.

Solid relationships are at the core of mission effectiveness for Det. 1. We work hard to keep the lines of communication open not only within the 50th Space Wing but also with our mission partners at the Defense Information Systems Agency, industry and the 21st Space Wing, especially the 821st Air Base Group here, as well as our coalition partners.

The reason we put so much value on maintaining and developing these relationships can be derived from a concept documented in a book by David Alberts, John Garstka and Frederick Stein titled Network Centric Warfare: Developing and Leveraging Information Superiority. The authors describe the concept in this way:

NCW is more about networking than networks? As we will show, the power of NCW is derived from the effective linking or networking of knowledgeable entities that are geographically or hierarchically dispersed? The net result is increased combat power.

To me, this means relationships among people who communicate well. Our livelihood at Det. 1 depends on it.

During my initial interview with the 50th Space Wing commander, Col. James Ross, prior to taking command, he let me know that everyone in the 50 SW makes a difference. I wouldnt know the full meaning of his words until after I took command. Though it may seem like another day in the office at Schriever AFB, another package to process or even another question to answer from the field, I can tell you that its not. At Det. 1, we feel Schrievers impact every day. Whether it is protocol support for an upcoming distinguished visitor tour, logistics support to release an asset from supply or administrative support in taking care of our personnel, we convey what Schriever does into mission effectiveness.

Being a GSU of a GSU brings its own challenges but all can be overcome by strong relationships and good communication. Apply those communication concepts, develop those collaborative toolsets, but above all, keep the lines of communication open with your GSU. At the top of the world, Det. 1 is delivering global decisive effects because everyone makes a difference.

TOKYO Japan's coast guard says 13 crew members are missing from a 22-man fishing vessel after it collided with a much larger cargo ship off northeast Japan.

The 119-ton Horiei Maru and the 25,047-ton Nikkei Tiger collided about 900 kilometers east of Sendai around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

An official at the Shiogama Coast Guard office near Sendai said the smaller vessel may have sunk. Osamu Nishikawa said the coast guard sent two planes to look for survivors.

Nine of the fishing boat's crew were rescued. Five are Japanese and four are Indonesian. Twelve of the missing are Japanese, and one is Indonesian.

What are the rental rates and vacancy rates for office spaces in Metro

What are rental rates for office spaces in Metro Manila?

I believe one real estate sector where foreclosed property investors can focus on is the office market. Office space rental is a necessary and budgeted expense for companies who earn well so it may be worth considering as an investment.

You may either rent out office space or use the office space for your own business. I noticed this sector when I had clients who bought office space from banks, as the price per square meter is below market value.

Since many may not be familiar with the office market, one may ask, is there really growth in this sector? Are rental rates for office spaces really going up? How about vacancy rates, is there really a demand?

Where can I find current rental rates for office spaces in Metro Manila?

Have you ever thought of investing in commercial foreclosed properties like office spaces but have been wondering where to get rental rates? Think about it, you need this information to make sure the numbers work right?

I believe I have found a solution, through Pinnacle?s Market Insight bulletin for June 2012 which discusses real estate outlook and most importantly, the average current rental rates of the Central Business Districts (CBD?s) namely: ?Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Ortigas, Quezon City, and Alabang.

Pinnacle Market Insight June 2012 ? Sustaining the Growth ? PDF (Click to view/download)

?

You may also download it through this link:?Pinnacle Market Insight June 2012 ? Sustaining the Growth?(PDF)

Aside from the current rental rates of office space in CBD?s, what I like about Pinnacle?s Market Insight bulletin for June 2012 is that it discusses the economics side of real estate in a ?chewable? manner. Many people?s minds would shut down at the mention of ?economics? but it is really something that we should include in our evaluation of which assets to invest in. It?s good that we need not do the nitty-gritty research on economics ourselves. ?Also, Pinnacle?s bulletin discusses other real estate sectors which investors may consider or look out for.

Luxury Residential market

Another real estate sector which you may consider investing in is the luxury residential sector, with expatriates as customers. According to Pinnacle?s Market Insight bulletin for June 2012, houses in Forbes Park are rented out for as high as P500,000 per month, and luxury condominiums are rented out for as high as P250,000 per month.

Areas that will boom soon

With the government?s PPP (Public-Private Partnership) initiatives, many expect that properties in places currently far from the CBD?s will boom soon. It may be good to consider investing now while the selling prices are still not high. I have noted that banks have a lot of inventory as well in these areas.

Investors may consider investing in the Daang-Hari area, since as noted in Pinnacle?s Market Insight bulletin for June 2012, the SLEx-Daang Hari toll road was already awarded to Ayala Corporation ? this is the first project to be awarded under the PPP program.? Watch out too for the NLEx-SLEx? connector? road, ?the LRT? 1? Extension from Baclaran to Bacoor, Cavite, and the NAIA Expressway Project.

Shuttle Endeavour heading to L.A. to retire: why some neighbors are ruffled (+video)

In the logistical maneuvering to move space shuttle Endeavour the 12 miles from Los Angeles airport to the California Science Center downtown, 395 street trees will come down. Frustration abounds.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / September 20, 2012

A large crowd takes photographs of the Space Shuttle Endeavour sitting atop NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft at Ellington Field in Houston on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Endeavour will spend the night in Houston before continuing its journey from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the California Science Center in Los Angeles where it will be on permanent display.

Space shuttle Endeavour is being cheered as it soars cross-country into a Tinseltown retirement, but here in Los Angeles the ex-NASA behemoth is getting a cool reception from some of its future neighbors.

That?s because the job of transporting a 172,000-pound, five-story-high, 78-foot-wide space artifact is, well, a mighty endeavor. And some 395 Los Angeles trees are being forced to give up their place in the sun to make way for its 12-mile trek in October from the Los Angeles airport to its new home at the California Science Center (CSC) in downtown.

Endeavour, which flew 25 space missions before being grounded, is scheduled to land in Los Angeles midday Friday.

Despite months of intensive planning and a $200 million price tag for a five-year plan to house and promote the shuttle at the CSC, officials were still meeting with local residents Monday, the day the shuttle was initially supposed to depart the Kennedy Space Center (but was delayed because of weather). Behind closed doors, talks were conducted over such issues as how many trees may need to be removed from neighborhoods for the shuttle as it passes at 2 miles per hour through city streets.

In a statement following the rancorous meeting, even as residents continued to voice disappointment to local media, CSC president Jeffrey Rudolph said, ?We are pleased that we are on track to move the Endeavour to the Science Center, where it can deliver substantial educational and economic benefits to the South Los Angeles community and the state of California.?

He noted that the center plans to move forward with a newly revised tree replacement program, which, he says, ?will improve the streetscape in the South Los Angeles, Westchester, and Inglewood communities with nearly 1,000 new trees.?

The original plan, which had included a 2-for-1 tree replacement offer, has now been raised to more than 3-for-1. The tree replacement program follows CSC efforts over the years to create a park and landscaping that beautifies the neighborhood and provides recreational space for wide usage, Mr. Rudolph says.

According to the CSC, more than half the trees already had been scheduled for removal to enhance airport security or to make way for a Metro construction project, and another 20 are ?environmentally unfriendly? trees that are damaging sidewalks and streets.

The new trees will be between 10 and 14 feet tall, and they will reach approximately the same size as most of the trees they are replacing in about two to five years. The CSC will also provide free maintenance.

Nonetheless, residents continue to voice their frustrations with the manner in which the shuttle arrival has been handled. How things went shows that when city officials want something, they will find a way, even if the plan has seemingly insurmountable hurdles ? in this case, hundreds of mature trees, says Los Angeles activist and blogger Jasmyne Cannick.

Before the city ?decided to chop down the trees and change the landscape of the city, it should have asked the people who were going to be affected by the changes instead of moving forward and going back and making amends after the damage is done,? she says via e-mail. Too often, she continues, ?this is how business is conducted when it comes to certain communities.?

However, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been ebullient in his support.

?Los Angeles is a world-class city that deserves an out-of-this-world-attraction like the Endeavour,? he said in a statement, adding, ?We welcome the shuttle with open arms.?

From a national perspective, Washington-based media strategist Brendan Kownacki suggests that environmental concerns are secondary to the symbols of goals Americans cherish, such as space exploration. ?This is a great symbol of what we are capable of doing,? he says. If there?s any doubt about the value Americans place on manned spaceflight, he says, look no further than the tributes after the recent passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong. ?We gave him a hero?s send-off,? he says.

While saying he is deeply saddened by the loss of any mature trees, Edward Devinney, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, says, "Still, this is an amazing device and says a lot about what we can do.?

The object itself is important, he adds, for the simple fact that ?people will look at it and say, this is really impressive that we were able to put that up there.?

Brother PT-1090 P-Touch Home & Family ?Simply Stylish? Labeler ...

36 of 38 people found the following review helpful

This review is from: Brother PT-1090 P-Touch Home & Family ?Simply Stylish? Labeler (Office Product)

I got this electronic labeler on sale for only $15 at Office Depot. It came with a roll of 16-ft black on white laminated labeling tape but it didn?t come with batteries.

Pros:

The main features I like about the label printer is that is has the Deco Mode feature to print special designs for scrapbooking and birthday cards. Its display is very easy to read and the displayed icons are nice. It even has over 170 different symbols (a musical note symbol for my music downloads and a camera symbol for my photos) to pick from. I also like how there?s 8 different frames to pick from too, so I can embellish my labels with stars, flowers, bubbles, etc. The date/time stamp thing with one keystroke comes in very handy, which is really convenient for installing batteries on smoke detectors for fire safety, and that?s also good for indicating when was the last time I inflated the tires of my car to get a good gas mileage. I also don?t even have to press a fn key to type numbers. It even prints very clearly (180 dots per inch). And finally, I can even preview to see how many inches of tape is used when the label?s printed, but my Dymo doesn?t have this feature.

Cons:

- However, the main thing is that although I set the margins to the narrowest setting (1/6 in on both sides), the printer still uses an additional inch on one end of the tape, so I do need a pair of scissors to trim off the one-inch leftover along the two black dots. This is the only reason I give the labeler 4 stars but having to trim off the leftover doesn?t bother me. By the way, I?ll give it 5 stars if the labeler doesn?t use another inch of tape when I print a label.
- Also, the keyboard isn?t in QWERTY (other people have complained about this), but I can still type efficiently using the alphabetical keyboard, so the non-QWERTY doesn?t bother me either.
- Besides the leftover tape and the keyboard, when I want to insert a Pictograph symbol, such as a musical note or a telephone icon, the screen will just show something like A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, etc. instead of just the actual symbols printed on the reference card, so it?s kind of awkward to me and that?s another reason I give the labeler 4 stars. It?ll be much better if Brother designs the screen with more vertical pixels to fit the actual symbols on the screen, so it?ll make it a lot less awkward to me.
- The labeling tapes are also pretty expensive ($22 at Office Depot for a roll of 26.2 ft = 7.0 cents an inch), so I keep the margins and the widths of the letters and set to the narrowest, and I also verify and correct the spelling before I print. I won?t regret the cost if I use the tape wisely and I use the narrow settings on my labeler. If I wanna label more things cheaply, I can label my things with pens and paper, so this is a good opportunity to practice my handwriting, especially in cursive because cursive is more natural and it?s also a good and valuable skill for me to have.
- Finally, it will be better if Brother has the tapes available in more colors (up to 1/2 in wide), such as blue on white (curretly available in 3/4 in wide but not 1/2 in wide or narrower), green on white, lime green on black, magenta on white, purple on white, etc.

Tapes:

This labeler uses the TZ laminated labeling tapes, which they?re more heat, cold, water, and abrasion resistant than the standard M tapes (not laminated). There?s different colored tapes to pick from, but the labeler can accept tapes up to 1/2 inch wide.

Uses And Purposes:

I use it to backup my music I downloaded from iTunes and my photos of my vacations, family, and friends on my CD-Rs. I also label my file folders to organize my homework for my college classes. I also keep my things personalized, especially my water bottle because I expose it to water a lot and I don?t want the water to ruin my name printed on the label. I even personalize my little sisters? school supplies to get them prepared for school. Finally, I even label the light switches around my parents? house.

Conclusion:

Overall, this item is very good for keeping my things well-organized, and I?m happy w/ it. So I recommend this device to my friends and family who wanna make their lives easier. But not really recommended for kids who need to practice their cursive handwriting, which is important in elementary and middle schools.

Obama 48%-Romney 47% in hard-fought presidential race in Florida

President Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a virtual tie in Florida, according to a Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald/Tampa Bay Times poll that indicates the Democrats? convention buzz and the Republican?s recent troubles haven?t altered the race in this biggest of battleground states.

Obama is drawing 48 percent support to Romney?s 47 percent among likely voters ? a lead well within the poll?s 3.5 percent error margin. Only 4 percent are undecided.

?Despite what some people have tried to claim, this race is still close in Florida,? said Brad Coker, who conducted the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey. ?It?s very much a toss-up.?

Obama has fought Romney to a standstill over who?s more trustworthy when it comes to the economy. But 51 percent say they?re not better off than they were four years ago, while 41 percent say they are.

The president is also up by 6 percentage points when it comes to foreign policy ? even after the attacks on a Middle East embassy and consulate that left four Americans dead.

But Romney has basically pulled even with Obama over managing Medicare, a traditional Democratic strength.

Obama is winning the Hispanic vote. But Democrats fret his margin might not be enough to counterbalance the white voters who favor Romney by double digits.

Obama, however, could have a crucial edge: the support of independent voters, who often decide elections in swing-state Florida. Independents back the president by 11 percentage points more than Romney. That?s a six-point shift since the last Mason-Dixon poll in July.

?Obama seemed to pick up some independent voters. That?s where Romney slipped a little bit,? Coker said.

Each candidate has strong support from his respective party, although Romney has slightly more Republican backing compared to the percentage of Democrats favoring Obama.

The relatively stronger internal party support could prove pivotal for Romney. If the same proportion of Republicans, Democrats and independents cast ballots in 2012 compared to 2008 ? a high watermark for Democrats ? Romney could have the edge on Election Day, the poll indicates.

?It?s a turnout game,? Coker said.

Florida Democrats and the Obama campaign have registered about 200,000 new voters this election. Many are likely to vote for Obama. Registered active Florida Democratic voters now outnumber Republicans 44-39 percent, a 5-point margin mirrored exactly by this latest poll.

In interviews with poll respondents, neither candidate is really loved by his own supporters.

?I don?t think Obama has any backbone,? said Andrew Ianniello, 76, a Democrat from Punta Gorda. ?Obama is a wimp. But Romney?s an even bigger wimp when it comes to him trying to pacify the tea party and conservatives.?

A third-party candidate, Libertarian Gary Johnson, isn?t drawing much support at all. Johnson, outgunned by the major political parties, has 1 percent.

The neck-and-neck race and the dwindling pool of undecided voters heighten the importance of the presidential debates next month.

The Mason-Dixon poll of 800 likely Florida voters was conducted for The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, the Tampa Bay Times, Bay News 9 and Central Florida News 13 from Sept. 17 to 19.

Some good replacements for Apple's Maps app

6 hrs.

Question:?I just upgraded to iOS 6 and I'm liking most of the new features. However, the new Maps app is terrible. Is there a good replacement that won't send me driving all over the place??

Answer: You're right???Apple's new Maps app doesn't seem to work that well in a lot of places. Everyone's results are going to vary, of course, but if you're looking for alternatives with a little more pedigree you have some great options. It really depends on what you use Maps for, and how much you're willing to spend. So, let's break it down a bit by the type of Maps user you are.

Get all the features of Apple's Maps (but better)

While the turn-by-turn navigation in Maps works really well, the maps themselves aren't that great. If you just want a simple voice navigated maps app that works properly, we really likeWaze because it's free, does traffic updates, has a great location search, and plenty more (pictured on the right).

Waze doesn't feature the lovely maps used in Apple's version, nor does it have the (not particularly useful) 3D views, but as far as navigation is concerned, it works really well. The bonus is that location search also works a lot better and offers more results than Maps. If you don't mind paying for an app, Navigon does a great job of navigation, has integrated Google business search, and just added public transit guides. It's currently on sale for $39.99.

Get transit directions and public transportation schedules

If you rely on public transportation for getting around town, Maps isn't going to do you any good. When you tap on the bus symbol in Maps, you're taken to a screen where you can download new apps. Even when you have one of the suggested apps installed, Maps kicks you out and sends you to another app for your directions.

Solutions for public transit woes vary depending on where you're located because there isn't a catch-all, great public transportation app that covers the entire country. The good news is that Maps is (kind of) smart enough to suggest apps in the location you're in.?

If you don't want to futz about with all that, here's a few we've tried that work well:

  • Lumatic City Maps: Lumatic City Maps supports 27 major major U. S.?cities, and offers public transit and walking directions. It also directly integrates data from Yelp, Foursquare, Facebook, and more into your local business searches, provides traditional maps, and is very easy to follow. If you only take public transportation (and live in one of the 27 cities), Lumatic City Maps works great.
  • Hopstop: If you live in one of the cities that Hopstop supports, then the Hopstop app is one of the cleanest, easiest to use transit navigation apps out there. It doesn't have a ton of features, but the schedules seem to be up-to-date, and the directions are easy to follow. Hopstop isn't integrated into Maps yet, but it works fine without it.
  • Navigon: As mentioned above, Garmin's Navigon app also just added public transportation. If you mix up whether you drive or take public transportation, the $39.99 might not be a bad deal.
  • Transit???Public Transit Trip Planner: If you know your way around the city and don't want to deal with directions, just routes, then we really like CG Transit. It doesn't have fancy features ??just timetables and directions.

Again, as we mentioned, transit apps aren't exactly universal. If you don't live in a major metropolitan city, you'll have to dig a little further to see if your local transportation system has an app of its own. You should also try at least both Lumatic and Hopstop for yourself since they're free, and we couldn't test them in every city they support to see what works best.

Get Google Maps back???sort of

Of course, what many people really want is good old Google Maps back. It wasn't without its faults, but the fact it integrates driving directions, up-to-date maps, transit directions, biking and walking directions, and a robust business search, it's very much missed. Chances are Google will release their own version of the Maps app soon, but for now you can at least use the web version pretty easily.

  1. Open up Safari on your iPhone and head to https://maps.google.com/.
  2. Tap the export button in the bottom menu bar.
  3. Tap "Add to Home Screen.
  4. Name the icon, and tap "Add."

Now you get a direct home screen shortcut to the mobile version of Google Maps. It's not as good as a real app, but it does provide all the features of the original iPhone app in one easy place.

Make Apple Maps better

If you actually enjoy Apple's Maps app (it is nice to look at after all), you can contribute to making it better. You can do this in one of two ways. First off, you can report problems with mislabeled streets, satellite images, directions, or other problems:

  1. From the Maps home screen, tap the curled page on the bottom right side.
  2. Tap "Report a Problem" (right above the large "Print" button).
  3. Select Your problem, add any comments, and send it off.

The other problem with Maps is the fact it gathers most of its business data from Yelp, and that means it's missing a lot of locations. You can add locations in the process mentioned above (in the Report a Problem screen, tap "Location is Missing" and drag the purple pin to the address you want), or add locations directly in Yelp so they show up. Whether you're a small business owner, or you just want to make sure your favorite restaurant is in Apple Maps, adding it to Yelp will eventually get it into Maps.

That should do it. For a lot of people, Apple's move to its own mapping system has caused some serious problems, and the lack of transit directions is a big bummer even if you only use public transportation on rare occasions. The above methods will get you rolling in style again, and should keep you from making too many bad turns.
