Vaccine group funds cervical cancer immunizations for poor

LONDON (Reuters) - The GAVI global vaccines group is to help protect more than 180,000 girls in eight countries across Africa and Asia from cervical cancer by funding immunization projects with vaccines from Merck and GlaxoSmithKline.

The non-profit GAVI Alliance, which funds bulk-buy vaccination programs for poor nations, said on Monday that Ghana, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone and Tanzania would be the first countries to get its support for cervical cancer protection pilot projects.

Merck's Gardasil and GSK's Cervarix vaccines are the world's only two approved shots designed to protect against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes the vast majority of cervical cancer cases.

More than 85 percent of cervical cancer deaths occur in developing nations and 275,000 women die of the disease each year. This means cervical cancer now kills more women worldwide than childbirth, claiming a life every two minutes, GAVI said.

Experts say the annual worldwide cervical cancer death rate could rise to 430,000 by 2030 if no action is taken to protect more women from it.

"Introducing the HPV vaccine in developing countries is the start of a global effort to protect all girls against cervical cancer," GAVI chief executive Seth Berkley said in a statement.

A study published in 2011 found that since 1980 new cervical cancer case numbers and deaths have dropped substantially in rich countries - many of which have screening programs and have also recently introduced HPV vaccinations - but risen dramatically in Africa and other poor regions.

PRICE NEGOTIATIONS

GAVI - backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNICEF, donor governments and others - has been working with the vaccine manufacturers to secure the most affordable price for the shots.

Merck has said it is prepared to offer Gardasil to GAVI countries at a deeply discounted price of $5 per dose, meaning a three-dose course would cost $15. GAVI has previously described this as a "a good starting offer".

The pilot projects are designed to give countries a chance to test whether they can put in place the systems needed to roll out HPV vaccines nationally.

Unlike most other vaccines, which are given to babies and children under age five, HPV vaccines are designed to be given to girls aged nine to 13 in an effort to protect them before they are likely to become sexually active.

One major challenge to effectively delivering HPV vaccines is that many developing countries do not offer routine health services for girls in this age group. But GAVI said initial experience in offering HPV vaccines through schools in Africa, Asia and Latin America had been encouraging.

By 2015, GAVI says it hopes to help more than 20 countries immunize around a million girls with HPV vaccines through pilot projects, and by 2020 it hopes to have helped more than 30 million girls in over 40 countries to get the vaccine.

Bucks Food Calendar: February 1, 2013 | Bucks County Taste

footballIt?s Super Bowl weekend! To be honest, I?m not a football fan but I do enjoy the eating tradition that goes along with this American uber-event. And this weekend, there are plenty of places to go to enjoy the game or eat and drink before the game!

The Stockton Market is offering lots of good food for your Super Bowl party. Ron?s BBQ (formerly Mighty Quinn) will have wings, BBQ sliders, chili, baked beans and coleslaw. Metropolitan Seafood will offer everything from chipotle chicken wings, shrimp cocktail platters and all types of shrimp (buffalo, coconut, tequila?oh my) as well as sushi platters. Highland Gourmet will be making their beef chili and Milk House Farm Market will feature vegetarian chili. For large or special orders, pre-order for Sunday pick-up.

Old York Cellars in Ringoes?will celebrating the big game with a wine and chili tasting, with chili provided by Bitter Bob?s BBQ in New Hope. They?ll also be offering free tastings for ?football widows? on Sunday.

Pierogies; iStockSt. Mark?s Orthodox Church in Wrightstown is selling lots of good food on Saturday in preparation for the big game. Come to their ?Ethnic Food in Time for Super Bowl Party? to buy pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kielbasi and halushky.

Old Bethlehem Road Hotel in Quakertown is really doing it up and sounds like a fun place to watch the game. They?ll be giving away a free beer every time a beer commercial airs (to the first person who calls it), free food at half time and a free jello shot every time your team scores. Game time is 6:30 pm but they will open at 11:30 am on Sunday and feature all-you-can-eat wings and $2 pounders.

Finally, if you want some great BBQ for the game, check out our previous post, Superbowl BBQ, for a list of BBQ places in Bucks County and where to go for great wings in Bucks.

If you?re interested in gluten-free cooking there are two events happening this Tuesday, February 5. Carlow Cookery is offering a class, ?Gluten Free Everyday,? and Medicine in Balance is hosting their monthly Gluten Free/Healthy Living Support Group. Find out more on their websites.

On Saturday, the?Presbyterian Church of Milford is hosting a Locally Grown All You Can Eat Breakfast from 6 am to 12 pm. Sounds great.

Finally, there are two interesting movies this week about our food. On Saturday, Snipes Farm and Education Center is showing, ?American Meat,? a pro-farmer documentary about chicken, cattle and hog production in America. This Movie & Popcorn Night is being held at the Fallsington Friends Meetinghouse in Levittown. And on Wednesday evening, the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance is showing, ?Queen of the Sun,? a documentary about global bee crisis and its impact on our food supply. FTC slams (and punishes) social network Path for deceiving users

The developers of Path have agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that the social network has deceived users and improperly collected personal information (including that of children). As part of the settlement, they'll have to "establish a comprehensive privacy program and to obtain independent privacy assessments every other year for the next 20 years." And pay a fine of $800,000.

Path is an app-based social network which allows users to share "moments" ? photos, text, geographic locations, song names, and more ? with small networks of up to 150 friends. The social network was initially iOS-only, but is now available on Android as well.

The FTC's complaint primarily focuses on the Path iOS app ? version 2.0, to be specific ? which according to the agency had a misleading user interface which "provided consumers no meaningful choice regarding the collection of their personal information."

When users took advantage of the app's "Add Friends" feature in order to find existing connections on the social network, they were provided with the options to search their contacts, find friends from Facebook, or invite friends via email or SMS. There was just one problem:

"Path automatically collected and stored personal information from the user?s mobile device address book even if the user had not selected the 'Find friends from your contacts' option," a press release by the FTC explains. "For each contact in the user?s mobile device address book, Path automatically collected and stored any available first and last names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, Facebook and Twitter usernames and dates of birth."

The FTC alleges that Path deceived users by claiming that it "only" collects certain information such as IP addresses, browser types, site activity info and similar ? rather than snatching up and storing personal information from the users' contacts. This deception was deemed to be a violation of a Children's Online Privacy Protection (COPPA) rule, which requires those who run online services to notify parents and obtain their permission before information is collected from children under the age of 13.

Path's developers explain, in a post on its official blog, that the information belonging to youngsters was collected due to a glitch. "[T]here was a period of time where our system was not automatically rejecting people who indicated that they were under 13," they write. "Before the FTC reached out to us, we discovered and fixed this sign-up process qualification, and took further action by suspending any under age accounts that had mistakenly been allowed to be created."

No matter the explanation, neither this violation nor the overall deception of users is being taken lightly by the FTC. In addition to slamming Path with a civil penalty amounting to $800,000 for the COPPA violation, the agency is also prohibiting it from "making any misrepresentations about the extent to which it maintains the privacy and confidentiality of consumers? personal information." Path is also required to delete any information collected from users under the age of 13 (though the social network claims it already deleted the contact information previously gathered).

In a press release, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz emphasized that the agency is focusing on consumer privacy violations:

Over the years the FTC has been vigilant in responding to a long list of threats to consumer privacy, whether it?s mortgage applications thrown into open trash dumpsters, kids information culled by music fan websites, or unencrypted credit card information left vulnerable to hackers. ... This settlement with Path shows that no matter what new technologies emerge, the agency will continue to safeguard the privacy of Americans.
