Reggie Jackson made headlines recently for saying in a Sports Illustrated interview that Alex Rodriguez?s numbers should be questioned because of performance-enhancing drugs and Kirby Puckett, Gary Carter, Jim Rice, Bert Blyleven, Don Sutton, and Phil Niekro shouldn?t be in the Hall of Fame.

That predictably caused a mini-uproar and he reportedly apologized personally to several of those offended parties, but today he issued an official statement?through the Yankees?apologizing in public to the whole group:

In trying to convey my feelings about a few issues that I am passionate about, I made the mistake of naming some specific players. This was inappropriate and unfair to those players, some of which are very close friends of mine. I think there are ways to speak from the heart without hurting people, and I?m disappointed that I didn?t take greater care in expressing my views.

I have been proactively reaching out to make personal apologies to those within the Hall of Fame community that I offended, and to the Yankees organization for any disruption that I caused in the clubhouse. I continue to have a strong relationship with the club, and look forward to continuing in my role with the team. As always, I remain dedicated to the great game of baseball.

There?s been some hair-splitting about whether the Yankees telling Jackson to stay away from the team on their recent road trip qualified as a ?ban? or just a request to let things cool off, but either way it?s pretty easy to connect the dots and assume that Jackson?s apology comes as a stipulation for his getting back into the team?s good graces.

It?s also worth noting that his apology doesn?t actually involve taking back anything he said about Rodriguez or the various Hall of Famers?two of whom are deceased?but rather focuses on the mistake being naming names and going public with his thoughts. Since the statement came through the Yankees presumably they?re satisfied with the wording and overall tone, and Jackson will resume his duties as ?special advisor.?

Hormone-mimicking chemicals cause inter-species mating

Hormone-mimicking chemicals released into rivers have been found to impact the mating choices of fish, a new study has revealed. The controversial chemical BPA, which emits oestrogen-like properties, was found to alter an individual's appearance and behavior, leading to inter-species breeding. The study, published in Evolutionary Applications, reveals the threat to biodiversity when the boundaries between species are blurred.

The research, led by Dr Jessica Ward from the University of Minnesota, focused on the impact of Bisphenol A (BPA) on Blacktail Shiner (Cyprinella venusta) and Red Shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) fish which are found in rivers across the United States. BPA is an organic compound used in the manufacture of polycarbonate and other plastics. It is currently banned from baby bottles and childrens' cups in 11 U.S. states.

"Chemicals from household products and pharmaceuticals frequently end up in rivers and BPA is known to be present in aquatic ecosystems across the United States," said Ward. "Until now studies have primarily focused on the impact to individual fish, but our study demonstrates the impact of BPA on a population level."

The team collected individuals of both species from two streams in the state of Georgia. The species were kept separated for 14 days in tanks, some of which contained BPA. On the 15th day behavioral trials were undertaken as individuals from different tanks were introduced to each other.

The scientists monitored any physiological or signalling differences the individuals displayed, such as colour, as well as any behavioral differences during courtship, such as mate choice.

BPA disrupts an individual's endocrine system, which controls the release of hormones. This impacts behavior and appearance, which in turn can lead an individual to mistake a newly introduced species as a potential mate.

This process poses long-term ecological consequences, especially in areas threatened by the introduction of invasive species. BPA and other hormone-mimicking chemicals can escalate the loss of native biodiversity by breaking down species barriers and promoting the invader.

"Our research shows how the presence of these manmade chemicals leads to a greater likelihood of hybridization between species," concluded Ward. "This can have severe ecological and evolutionary consequences, including the potential for the decline of our native species."

Living Wills, redux

It?s summer time here.? Where we drive more, go to the beach, vacation, and do things we don?t normally do.? Which means we put ourselves at risk.? And, I?ve asked you to prepare a living will. ?These documents were first created in the 60?s, but the Quinlan case (the one where the woman lasted in a vegetative state [almost] forever) drove the case home for a lot of folks.

But, that may not be enough.? Even though about ? of us have done so, the documents we prepare may be just a little too simplistic.? Technology is moving that quickly.? (Read this post for some ideas.)

And, it?s driving the needs for new and better living wills. It?s driving the need to discuss these unpleasant thoughts with our loved ones, with the ones to whom we?ve left the terrible task of attempting to follow our wishes- which we may have failed to express to them.? And, between these issues and the fact that harvesting organs is now being done differently that when I first signed on, I?ve chosen to designate a health-care agent.

We can?t expect our health care agents- or our loved ones- to know what it means when we say ?pull the plug if we can?t have a meaningful quality of life?.? We each have different definitions of that concept- and there is no universal definition upon which someone can rely.? We really need to spell out which cognitive decline we can accept.

A good way to conceive of this situation is to examine the ?Five Wishes? concept.? It?s not free- but it?s well worth the nominal fee ($5) that it costs to answer the questions.? The first two are actually legal documents (who is the healthcare agent, and what kinds of medical treatments will be acceptable).? The others address comfort of care, where to be treated and who/how does so, and final wishes for one?s loved ones.

Of course, you can provide your designated health care agent simple instructions- if you doubt, don?t treat me is about as simple as it gets.?? But, I still vote for the document- it works in every state.

Big boxes try to slow down 'showrooming'

Big box retailers such as Best Buy have suffered from ?showrooming,? where customers come into a store to find products they want to buy, but then walk out and purchase them for discounted prices at an online retailer, such as Amazon.com.

Now, as part of a new turnaround strategy, Best Buy, the nation?s largest electronics retailer by revenue, is fighting back, and to do so it?s reportedly taking a page out of Apple?s retailing play book.

At a test store near its headquarters in Richfield, Minn., the electronics retailer is offering a Solution Central help desk staffed by its Geek Squad division employees, which is similar to the Genius Bar found at Apple?s retail stores, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Best Buy is adopting other Apple-like retailing strategies, such as letting customers pay for products in several locations in the store rather than forcing them to line up at checkouts, the Journal said, and the recently-opened store is less concerned with displaying every Best Buy product and more with ?connecting customers with employees who can answer questions or help program equipment.?

Best Buy will close 50 of its 1,100 U.S. big-box stores and convert 60 of the rest to the new format, the report said. These stores are about 20 percent smaller than the 58,000 square feet common at traditional Best Buy stores. In the new-format stores, Best Buy devotes less space to big TV sets, which are seeing waning sales, and more space to tablets, e-readers and cell phones, for which Best Buy has seen its market share grow, the paper said.

Best Buy?s new store format is just a first step in dealing with the retailer?s long-standing problems, interim Chief Executive Mike Mikan told the paper. But a strategy change at Best Buy is sorely-needed, retail experts say, as the electronics retailer has struggled in recent years in the face of fierce competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com.

Rob Enderle, an analyst with Enderle Group, said the Best Buy store redesign is a good first step, but the retailer also needs to think about improving the locations of its stores and the products that draw people into those stores.

Opening up the stores will make them friendlier, but the problem is people are going into Best Buy stores right now and they?re choosing to buy the products online instead, he said.

Best Buy should move away from strip-mall locations where many of Best Buy?s stores are currently located. These locations are seeing declining foot traffic, he said.

Also, Best Buy needs to work on improving the products it offers visitors to its stores -- they should be unique and appealing, he said.

?This is a step in the right direction, and sometimes it?s all about direction and future [for retailers], but you need all three steps,? he said.

While Best Buy?s revenue has remained flat over the past three years, its profit fell sharply in the past year, ended March 3, 2012, with many asking if the electronics retailer can take the steps needed to prevent it going the same way as the likes of now-bankrupt electronics retailers such as Circuit City.

Adding to Best Buy?s troubles is news that founder and former board chairman Richard Schulze is exploring a takeover of the company. Schulze resigned as chairman earlier this month amid a scandal involving former CEO Brian Dunn. The board criticized Schulze for not reporting Dunn?s inappropriate conduct with a subordinate.

Especially challenging to Best Buy is overhauling its bricks-and-mortar structure. Similar to other big-box retailers, Best Buy suffers from a disadvantage over its rivals because of the cost of maintaining stores. It spends $6 billion on bricks-and-mortar locations on a $50 billion sales base, putting the company at a 10 percent price disadvantage to all online competition. The challenge for Best Buy is to reduce that disadvantage.

Other big retailers are fighting back against showrooming, the New York Times reported Thursday, which has cost traditional retailers millions in sales.

Wal-Mart, Macy?s, Sears, the Container Store and Best Buy are turning their stores into extensions of their own online operations, the paper reports. These retailers are stepping up efforts to add online return centers, pickup locations, free shipping outlets, payment booths and even drive-through customer service centers for online sales to their brick-and-mortar buildings, the Times report said.

The news comes as retailers report tepid sales numbers, particularly at big-box retailers. A report Thursday showed shoppers reduced spending in June in the face of a deteriorating economy. Results from the likes of Costco, Target and Macy?s missed estimates.

Since hitting a recent high in late 2010, shares of Best Buy have lost 50 percent of their value.

Best Buy was not immediately available to comment.
