Don't dismiss the Nexus Q just yet ? it has potential

18 hrs.

When Google announced the Nexus Q, an Android-powered "social streaming device," most people scoffed. It has a silly label ??what is social streaming anyway? ??and a startling $299 price tag. But don't write the ball-shaped?gadget off just yet,?because it has the guts and soul to roll its way into your home.

During the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, I?spent a lot of time chatting with folks about the Nexus Q. It's been referred to as everything from a "ball of awesomeness" ??by a Google employee's son?? to a "polished turd."

The price tag's what riled people up most, of course. Why spend $300 on the Nexus Q when you can buy an Apple TV for $99?

"Because it's got all the potential in the world," I theorized, while discussing the device with a former Apple developer. Don't get me wrong, I learned long ago that the true?potential of anything is rarely ever met, but Google's nudging the Nexus Q along in the right ways.

Right now you can only access media through Google Play (formerly the?Android Market) and YouTube on the Nexus Q, but that'll easily change in the future. Google's made sure that the Nexus Q is as?open as possible to developers (and even plans on setting up forums to encourage them). There could soon be all sorts of apps, hacks and tricks for the Android-powered device.

If software enhancements aren't sufficient, then you should keep in mind that the Nexus Q has a micro USB port which could be used for third-party accessories.

You see where I'm going with this? The Nexus Q offers 16GB of on-board storage, NFC support, can be expanded using the micro USB slot, is as open as the 24-hour diner down the street, and can double as a weapon. (This thing's surprisingly heavy.)

It might take a generation or two for the surface of the Nexus Q's potential to be truly scratched, but once it is, Apple TV and other similar devices are in trouble.

The Nexus Q can be pre-ordered now. It will start shipping in mid-July.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Supreme Court Year in Review

I have a few further thoughts on the health care decision. Are they too late? I've never entirely grasped the format of our discussion; the mention of breakfast particularly baffles me. And maybe when the court ends its term, the discussants, like the participants in the trial of the Jack of Hearts at the end of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, turn into playing cards and are scattered to the winds. But anyway, here are my further thoughts:

Professor Dellinger said in reference to the health care decision: "What is most important today is not constitutional theory or presidential politics, but the enormous improvement in access to health care for millions of Americans, including increased access to preventive care such as mammograms and birth control, provisions allowing young people to stay on their parents' health insurance, provisions prohibiting insurance companies from turning down people who have pre-existing conditions or from increasing premiums to unaffordable levels for families who have a child born with a birth defect. Those are the most important winners today." I don't agree. I am pleased that the Supreme Court upheld the law, but I don't think it's a good law.

The Washington Post has an excellent economic journalist named Robert Samuelson, and he had a column a week or two ago in which he persuasively criticized the law. There are three basic criticisms. The first is that it is so long and complex that actually no one knows what its consequences will be. It was an irresponsible enactment. Second, it was very badly timed. Creating economic uncertainty is the very last thing one wants to do during a depression, because, as Keynes argued, it is uncertainty that deepens a depression and retards recovery from it, because a rational and extremely common reaction to uncertainty is to freeze. The health care industry is the largest in the United States, and the law was bound to affect the costs of medical care (which of course include health insurance premiums) for business and for people in the labor force (whether employed or self-employed) in ways that could not be forecast. I know one is supposed to call the economic malaise in which the nation is sunk, which in a couple of months will be four years old, the "Great Recession," but I call it a depression. It is not as severe as the 1930s depression, yet it may have as profound economic and political consequences. It merited and did not receive the full attention of government.

Third, the law will increase health care costs, and hence the federal deficit, which is already staggering. I agree with liberal economists that the current deficit, though huge, is nothing much to worry about, because of the extremely low cost at which the U.S. Treasury can borrow these days (thanks to Europe's economic distress and lack of private demand for loans), even long term. I agree that the stimulus of February 2009 should have been larger, with the government borrowing heavily and using the borrowed money to finance projects that would employ lots of workers. But the deficit cannot be allowed to grow indefinitely, and the health care law will help it to grow indefinitely. There is no way the nation can add 30 million people to the private or public health insurance rolls without experiencing higher health costs. The reason is that insured people demand and receive more health care than the uninsured. That is explicit in Professor Dellinger's reference to health costs that are "unaffordable" by the uninsured. The care they will now get may improve their health. They may live longer. But the longer people live, the more medical care they need.

I think the best one can say for the law is that it has drawn attention to the manifold problems of our health care system. As a result, or partial result, of the law, some modest improvements, such as recommendations against excessive screening for rare medical problems, are in the works, although they will be resisted by most doctors, especially specialists, who are most doctors nowadays. But I think any cost savings that ensue will be swamped by the 30 million new eager health care consumers.

All this is germane to the Supreme Court's health care decision because if the court had wanted to make "policy judgments," it could have had a field day. Chief Justice Roberts in his opinion said that that's not the Supreme Court's business. A legal realist would say that most Supreme Court decisions in constitutional cases are policy judgments?inevitably, because of the Framers' and ratifiers' inexplicable failure to peer into the future and observe 20th-century American society. Where was their foresight? (I hope readers understand the sarcasm.) I think Roberts was quite right to say that "we [the Justices, but it is true of the entire American judiciary] possess neither the expertise nor the prerogative to make policy judgments." I would emphasize lack of expertise as a general problem of the American judiciary. But policy judgments are inescapable when dealing with the Constitution, and I think the best interpretation of what the court did in its health care decision was to make a prudential judgment to allow the law to stand, a judgment that I imagine is based to a significant extent on the hammering the court would have taken had it struck the law down. And, to recur to Samuelson's concern, the uncertainty created by the law would have been compounded rather than dissipated by its invalidation, because of uncertainty as to how Congress would respond, given the popularity of provisions (insurance for pre-existing conditions and coverage of kids up to age 26 by their parents' health insurance) that the mandate is intended to finance and that would have gone down the drain had the dissenters had their way, and because of the further fact that many health providers have already taken steps to comply with the law, and undoing those steps would be costly and confusing. A Donnybrook was averted.

And speaking of dissenters: Would they have had the courage of their convictions had they been able to pick up a fifth vote? Or would they have been like the dog that barks ferociously when it's behind a fence, but open the gate and it slinks away timidly?

RIM: Kill Yourself So Others Might Live [Rim]

RIM is toast. RIM, in the very near future, will no longer exist. BB10 will probably never be released. The ship is sinking, on fire, and covered in ants. If it keeps bleeding out, there maybe nothing left worth saving. But if RIM chops itself up for salvage now? We all win. More »

Turkey jet crisis unlikely to pull NATO into Syria

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Syria's downing of a Turkish military jet has the feel of a turning point that could drag Western powers into a conflict that is spiraling out of control.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has vowed to hold Syria to account, while Britain's foreign minister said Damascus won't be allowed to act with impunity.

But for all the hard talk, the prospect of Western military intervention in Syria remains remote, at best.

For one thing, military action is unlikely to get the support of either the U.N. Security Council or the Arab League, and outside intervention without the blessing of both of those bodies is all but unthinkable. And there is little appetite among the 28 NATO countries ? of which the U.S. is the largest ? for another war in the Middle East.

Libya was hard enough, and for a many nervous months it looked as if that conflict might end in an embarrassing stalemate for the West. And Syria would be tougher than Libya. Syrian President Bashar Assad's army is better equipped, better trained, better paid and far more loyal than was that of late Libyan leader Moammar Gaddhafi.

So for the moment, despite the increasing violence and the staggering number of deaths, action by the international community seems to be limited to sanctions and strong words.

And so it was on Monday, when foreign ministers from the 27 European Union countries condemned Syria's downing Friday of a Turkish jet, but said the bloc would not support military action in the troubled country.

"What happened is to be considered very seriously," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal. Having gotten his denunciation out of the way, he let the other shoe drop: "We do not go for any interventions."

Turkish officials have said the jet mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace, but was warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile (1.6 kilometers) inside international airspace when Syria shot it down. The Turkish pilots are still missing.

Turkey immediately called a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's governing body, on Tuesday to discuss the incident. Any NATO member can request such consultations if their territorial integrity has been threatened.

An alliance diplomat said ambassadors will discuss Turkey's concerns ? and would likely condemn the downing.

"But there won't be anything more specific than that," said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of standing rules.

Turkey, too, appeared to be attempting to moderate the situation, trying to balance a response that would assuage domestic outrage over the shooting, while avoiding a conflict. Turkey has been one of the fiercest critics of Assad's crackdown. But at this point, it has no wish to inflame already-heightened tensions.

A Turkish government official said the government was trying to ratchet up diplomatic pressure on Syria, where activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the 15-month uprising. He said the country was still working out what steps to take ? though they would not include military intervention.

"We are not talking about war, but we will keep the pressure on Syria and give it no chance to catch its breath," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Mustafa Kibaroglu, a professor of international relations at Istanbul's Okan University, said that by calling Tuesday's emergency meeting, Turkey was trying to show Syria that it has the full support of NATO and the European Union.

But he dismissed the possibility the alliance would activate a rule in its founding treaty ? Article 5 ? that declares that an attack against any NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

"Unless there is another ... act of provocation (from Syria), there will be no activation of Article 5," Kibaroglu said.

Syria has said it was unaware that the F-4 Phantom jet belonged to Turkey, and that it was protecting its air space against an unknown intruder. In the past, Israeli warplanes have penetrated Syrian airspace by flying over the Mediterranean coastline.

Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was an accident, caused by the "automatic response" of an officer commanding an anti-aircraft gun. The man saw a jet coming at him at high speed and low altitide and opened fire, Makdissi said.

Analysts said that, although the latest incident will likely be contained, the conflict in Syria is now threatening to draw in other nations.

"Syria's apology will probably quell the immediate outrage," said Barak Seener, a Middle East expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a British military think tank.

"But it's increasingly clear that as the conflict escalates there will be a spillover effect with regional consequences," he said. "While NATO will not get involved yet, this illustrates that international actors will increasingly be sucked into the conflict."

Still, there is a sense of war-weariness in NATO, an aversion to any more involvement in the Middle East after last year's conflict over Libya.

The alliance's primary focus remains the costly war in Afghanistan, where the alliance still has about 130,000 troops, a decade after the ouster of the Taliban regime. Although NATO forces enjoy overwhelming superiority in numbers, firepower and mobility, the guerrillas are showing no sign of giving up.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has repeatedly said that the alliance would need a clear international mandate, and regional support, before it embarked on a mission in Syria.

Last year, the alliance launched air attacks on Libyan government targets only after receiving a mandate from the U.N. Security Council, along with backing from the Arab League.

But in Syria's case, the Arab League hasn't been able to agree on the need for military intervention. Even Syria's different opposition groups are riven by divisions over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt. Some in the Syrian opposition argue that it would reduce their country to rubble, leaving them nothing on which to build a new future once Assad was gone.

And Russia and China ? both veto-wielding members of the Security Council ? have consistently shielded Assad's regime from international sanctions over its violent crackdown on protests. Russia also has continued to provide Syria with arms, despite Western calls for a halt in supplies.

Last week, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Syrian crisis on the sidelines of a Group of 20 economic conference in Mexico.

The meeting ended without apparent agreement on how to end the violence.

Great Ideas To Think About Before Your Next Commercial Real ...

When investing in commercial real estate, go bigger. If you are considering buying a five-unit building, remember that managing 50 units is just as easy as handling five. You need commercial financing regardless of the number of units, and larger buildings will be cheaper per unit.

Look into any potential environmental problems before you buy. A large concern is when you currently own a property that has issues with hazardous waste. Once you own the property, any problems, hazardous waste related or otherwise, are yours to deal with.

You will probably have to put a lot of effort into your new investment at the beginning. You have to look around for the right chance, and you might need to do some improvements on the property once you purchase it. Don?t abandon you commercial real estate venture because it currently consumes so much of your time. It will pay off in the long run.

It is important to know how to deal with emergency maintenance. The landlord in the building where you have your office will be able to provide emergency repair contact information for you. Have their phone number handy and know how long it will take them to arrive in an emergency. Consider how an emergency will affect your business operations, and have an emergency operating plan in place.

When looking for commercial real estate properties to house your business, keep in mind that size is among the biggest factors. To avoid the need to move in the future, invest in a piece of commercial property that allows for ample growth.

Buying a larger property is great for a variety of reasons. For example, with more units you?ll be able to charge a smaller profit on each and ensure they fill up quickly, and yet reap great rewards. A lot of people who invest in real estate do not even give consideration to properties that contain fewer than ten units. It is generally accepted that a higher number of units correlates to higher profits.

Try feng shui in your home office as well as commercial real estate buildings. De-cluttering and open spaces are two key tenets, both of which are attractive to buyers.

Ensure that you have a singular investment focus at any given time. You will get better results if you stick to a single type of investment rather than doing land leasing, apartments, and offices all at once. Each of these investments will need to be closely monitored and given your full attention. It is a lot better to master one type of investment that to be mediocre with many.

One counterintuitive fact about the apartment market is that many experts recommend avoiding properties with fewer than ten units, as they are actually more of a pain to deal with than large complexes. However, every situation is unique. Do your research, and make an educated decision.

Be cautious of signing standard lease forms when leasing commercial real estate. It is not uncommon for real estate brokers to include detailed, confusing terms and clauses into the lease. By carefully perusing the document, you?ll avoid potential headaches and heartaches that a commercial lease sometimes produces.

Commercial transactions are significantly more time-consuming, complex and involved than the home-buying process. However, all of this is required because it facilitates higher returns on your investments.

When you are a new investor, it is best to focus on one type of investment at a time. Begin by selecting which type of commercial buildings you would most like to purchase and then devote all of your time to those types of properties. It is preferred to excel in one type instead of being mediocre in many types.

Use a digital camera to take pictures. Try to make sure that your pictures shows the defects.

Make sure you know what kind of environment your property is located. The one who?ll have to clean up any environmental waste on your property is you. Is the property you?re considering purchasing located in a flood zone? That is a decision you need to think long and hard about. As part of your decision to purchase a commercial real estate property, you should make inquiries at environmental assessment agencies in order to find out if there are any risks you should be aware of about the property and its surrounding area.

Be sure to have your property inspected by a licensed inspector prior to placing it up for sale. Fix all problems that they find as soon as possible.

Commercial property investors need to be conscious of drastic inflation in upcoming years. Investors in the past were protected by a clause that was built into any agreement that adjusted for inflation using Consumer Price Index comparisons. Today, this practice is all but extinct, leaving you more vulnerable to losses caused by inflation.

Do not hire a broker without finding out more about their past experience within commercial property. Choose one that specializes in your area of interest. You should be sure to enter into an exclusive agreement with that broker.

You must know what a good deal is, recognize it, and then be able to take advantage of it. Seasoned investors can spot a good deal quickly. Investors know when it is time to pass on a deal and use a pre-planned exit strategy when a bad deal calls for it. They also have an eye for repairs, are good at calculating risk, and they are good at knowing when their financial goals align with the properties in question.

By now, you should feel comfortable with the fundamentals of business real estate. Make sure you are flexible so that you can always be informed and know what to do in any type of situation. With this approach, you will be able to identify hidden opportunities, and make some very profitable deals.

Arrest made in 3 killings near Columbia University

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- Police have arrested a suspect in the execution-style shooting of three men found dead inside a parked BMW near Columbia University earlier this month, officials said.

Roberto Nunez, 30, was arrested in connection with the shootings Saturday morning in the Bronx. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Information on an attorney wasn't immediately?available.?

The gun used in the killings and DNA?linking the suspect to the crime have been recovered, police said. The DNA?came from a shirt he discarded near the crime scene, authorities said.

See the original report at NBCNewYork.com

"Detectives assigned to this case did a masterful job, relentlessly working it to apprehend a suspect who initially appeared so calm, collected, and out of reach." Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said after the arrest Saturday.

The three victims, 25, 26 and 30, were found inside a 2009 BMW parked near Claremont Avenue and West 122nd Street on June 7, police said.

The victims were known for robbing drug dealers and investigators believed they may have been targeted for that reason, sources told NBC?4 New York.

Two of the victims were found in the front seats of the car, and were shot in the head or neck; the third was found in the rear passenger seat and was shot in the left temple, according to NYPD?spokesman Paul?Browne.

Dana White: dos Santos vs. Velasquez Rematch No Longer Likely for UFC 152

Jun 24, 2012 - It was just two weeks ago when UFC president Dana White announced that the UFC's return to Toronto in September was likely to feature the UFC heavyweight title rematch between champ Junior dos Santos and challenger Cain Velasquez.

That's no longer the case.

In a UFC 147 post-fight interview on FUEL, White said while the fight was still going to happen, the date was likely to shift.

"The fight will happen, probably not in Toronto though," he said.

White did not give any indication of a new timeframe for the fight, saying, "it's going to depend on Junior," but offering no further specifics.

dos Santos knocked out Velasquez in just 64 seconds the first time around, and he recently defended his championship for the first time with a second-round knockout of Frank Mir at UFC 146. Velasquez rebounded from his first career loss with a knockout of his own against Antonio Silva on the same night.

During UFC 147 fight week in Brazil, the promotion announced that they were likely to return to the MMA hotbed in October. The date would certainly fit with a dos Santos title defense, but for now, White isn't saying whether or not the title match will be slotted into the show or shifted elsewhere on the rapidly filling calendar.

For now, a matchup pitting veteran B.J. Penn vs. upstart Rory MacDonald is the only fight the UFC remains publicly targeting for UFC 152.

Gulf system nearly a tropical storm

A weather system in the Gulf of Mexico has a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm this weekend, the National Hurricane Center reported Saturday morning.

Tropical-storm force winds were already detected by one buoy, the center said in its advisory, and showers and thunderstorms have been increasing over the eastern Gulf.

"Tropical storm watches or warnings could be required for a portion of the northern Gulf Coast over the weekend," it added. "Heavy rains and localized flooding are possible across the Yucatan Peninsula (in Mexico), western Cuba and much of Florida over the next day or two."

Forecasting models diverged widely on its potential path. Some took it east over northern Florida while others swung it north toward the Alabama-Mississippi border or west over Texas or Mexico.

As a precaution, BP on Saturday evacuated all non-essential personnel from offshore installations in the area. The largest U.S. offshore oil port as well as Anadarko Petroleum and Murphy Oil Corp. on Friday did the same.

Other oil companies were monitoring the situation.

The next named Atlantic tropical storm will be Debby.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, but got off to an early start this year. Tropical Storm Alberto quickly fizzled off South Carolina and Tropical Storm Beryl soaked the Southeast in May.

Tropical Storm Chris briefly became a hurricane before fizzling out Friday. But Chris was notable as it formed unusually far north for an early season hurricane.

Government forecasters predicted nine to 15 tropical storms in the Atlantic basin this year, with four to eight strengthening into hurricanes.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Did Neandertals Paint Early Cave Art?

Neandertal is and has always been the correct spelling. It's nothing new. It's from the German, from the place where they were first discovered, the Neander Valley, or Neander "Tal" ('Tal' means valley in German). However, in German it is common and appropriate to combine words to form compound nouns, as Fahrrad, (from 'fahrt', a trip, and 'rad', wheel) or Schadenfreude (from 'Schade', sadness, and 'Freude', joy). Hence, the words are combined to form the place-name of Neandertal. The spelling with the 'h' is anglicized, technically Neandertal is correct, inasmuch as it is the original name, from the original language.

Why not educate yourself before correcting other people's spelling, smart-ass...

Ouch. Fortunately my education is on my side on this one. The Germans can spell and pronounce the name of their valley however they want, but the scientific name of the Neanderthals is "Homo Neanderthalensis", and when using the name outside of the scientific community either way is acceptable, although the hard 't' sound and spelling has only entered popular usage relatively recently. You can look it up on wikipedia if you want - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neanderthal [wikipedia.org]. If it makes you feel better you can

Purported Xbox 720 To Cost $299 With Blu-ray Support, Kinect 2 And Virtual Reality In Time For Holiday 2013

v0zbYThe current gen Xbox may be a year past its halfway point but a purported "leaked" document dating back to August 2010 from a Microsoft presentation details the next gen Xbox 720 in great detail. Features for the next Xbox, according to the document, will include native Blu-ray playback, full support for HD and 3-D, and beefed up hardware (graphics and processor) under the hood. Other bits and pieces from the doc include PVR functionality, a low power mode setting during media playback and what amounts to an always-on mode. Gates did say years ago that the Xbox would eventually become the nerve center for any living room. But there's more.

Angry Birds plans China theme park

SHANGHAI (AP) ? Angry Birds is migrating to China.

Rovio, the Finnish gaming company behind Angry Birds has opened its Shanghai office and outlined plans for activity parks and stores across China, one of its biggest markets.

Angry Birds, currently the second most popular paid iPhone app, has a huge fan base in China, with much merchandise available in stores and online but most of it pirated.

The makers of the game, which features bubbly headed peevish birds attacking their enemies, the pigs, hopes it will be able to convert that popularity into legitimate sales.

"We expect to be more Chinese than the Chinese people, and we will add more and Chinese cultural elements to our products," Peter Vesterbacka, founder of "Angry Birds," said Thursday.

Rovio's initiatives so far in China have included moon cakes for the mid-Autumn Festival. It is opening stores in Shanghai and Beijing next month and is building an activity park in Shanghai's Tongji University.

It also plans a theme park in the nearby city of Haining, similar to its Angry Birds Land at Finland's Sarkanniemi Amusement Park.

Need for new lines of research stressed in a supplement to Journal of Alzheimer's Disease

Amsterdam, NL, June 14, 2012 No effective treatments are currently available for the prevention or cure of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most frequent form of dementia in the elderly. The most recognized risk factors, advancing age and having the apolipoprotein E ?4 gene, cannot be modified or treated. Increasingly, scientists are looking toward other risk factors to identify preventive and therapeutic strategies. Much attention recently has focused on the metabolic syndrome (MetS), with a strong and growing body of research suggesting that metabolic disorders and obesity may play a role in the development of dementia.

A new supplement to the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease provides a state-of-the-art assessment of research into the link between metabolic syndrome and cognitive disorders. The supplement is guest edited by Vincenza Frisardi, of the Department of Neurological and Psychiatric Sciences, University of Bari, and the Geriatric Unit and Gerontology-Geriatrics Research Laboratory, IRCCS, Foggia, Italy, and Bruno P. Imbimbo, Research and Development Department, Chiesi Farmaceutici, Parma, Italy.

The prevalence of MetS and obesity has increased over the past several decades. MetS is a cluster of vascular and metabolic risk factors including obesity, hypertension, an abnormal cholesterol profile, and impaired blood glucose regulation. "Although molecular mechanisms underlying the relationship between MetS and neurological disorders are not fully understood, it is becoming increasingly clear that cellular and biochemical alterations observed in MetS may represent a pathological bridge between MetS and various neurological disorders," explains Dr. Frisardi.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been linked with cognitive impairment in a number of studies. The risk for developing both T2D and AD increases proportionately with age, and evidence shows that individuals with T2D have a nearly twofold higher risk of AD than nondiabetic individuals.

Paula I. Moreira, Faculty of Medicine and Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal, outlines some of the likely mechanisms. Both AD and T2D present similar abnormalities in the mitochondria, which play a pivotal role in cellular processes that impair their ability to regulate oxidation in the cell. Human amylin, a peptide that forms deposits in the pancreatic cells of T2D patients, shares several properties with amyloid- plaques in the Alzheimer's brain. Insulin resistance is another feature shared by both disorders. Impairment of insulin signalling is directly involved in the development of tau tangles and amyloid (A) plaques. "Understanding the key mechanisms underlying this deleterious interaction may provide opportunities for the design of effective therapeutic strategies," Dr. Moreira notes.

In another article, author, Jos A. Luchsinger of the Division of General Medicine, Department of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, notes that while there seems to be little dispute that T2D can cause cerebrovascular disease and vascular cognitive impairment, whether T2D can cause late onset AD remains to be determined. "Although the idea is highly speculative, the association between T2D and cognitive impairment may not be causal. Several lines of evidence provide some support to the idea that late onset Alzheimer's disease could cause T2D, or that both could share causal pathways," he notes. He reviews epidemiological, imaging, and pathological studies and clinical trials to provide insight. "Given the epidemic of T2D in the world, it's important to determine whether the association between T2D and cognitive impairment, particularly late onset AD, is causal and if so, what are the mechanisms underlying it."

Dr. Frisardi notes that most efforts by the pharmaceutical industry have been directed against the production and accumulation of amyloid-. "Unfortunately, these efforts have not produced effective therapies yet, since the exact mechanisms of AD are largely unknown. Given that the onset of AD most likely results from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors, the research agenda should consider new platforms of study, going beyond the monolithic outlook of AD, by synthesizing epidemiological, experimental, and biological data under a unique pathophysiological model as a point of reference for further advances in the field."

Slowly, But Definitely Surely, Japan?s Suspended Nuclear Reactors Go Back Online

There's no more stopping Japan from restarting and blasting again online its suspended nuclear reactors.

This weekend, Japan, a year after being struck by a debilitating earthquake and tsunami that destroyed one of its nuclear reactors, is ready to bring back to life two of its suspended nuclear power plants.

The two reactors are in the western town of Ohi. Town Mayor Shinobu Tokioka on Thursday said he allowed the restarting of the idle nuclear reactor amid concerns on possible power shortages.

Japan has a total of 54 nuclear reactors, but all have been shutdown amid public clamor of safety concerns. The people likewise pressured federal government that all reactors undergo maintenance and rigid stress tests owing to the Fukushima meltdown crisis.

Although public perception to reopening the nuclear power plants still remain negative, the federal government have been saying the use of nuclear energy is important to Japan's economy.

Follow us

Moreover, according to financial site Penny Stock Detectives, all energy sources, when studied side by side, nuclear energy does far exceed the capacities of other energy sources by at least over 90 per cent capacity utilisation.

With the reopening of Japan's nuclear reactors, uranium demand is expected to regain strength.

"Nuclear power will remain a large source of energy production over the next decade to support the increase in energy usage, driving up demand for uranium," financial newsletter Profit Confidential said.

The world's consumption of uranium in 2011 reached 69,000 tonnes, The Australian reported, citing data from the World Nuclear Association. Majority or 80 per cent came directly from mines, while the rest from secondary sources such as commercial stockpiles and decommissioned nuclear weapons.

A possible supply shortage of uranium is seen two years from now, what with several new nuclear power plants expected to go online in?China, India and Russia between now and 2014.
