The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: South Africa, Home Away From Home

After an episode of packing last week, The Real Housewives of Atlanta officially arrived in Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday and the country will never be the same.

We relive the etiquette lessons and unbelievable screeching in THG's +/- recap!

With Kroy off at training camp, Kim stays home with the new baby and we barely see her except for a family dinner with her parents. Have I mentioned I find her parents kind of creepy? Her mom says very little and her dad says far too much.

Add to it that they can't wait for Kim to finish feeding the baby to sit down to eat. Now that's just rude. Minus 9.

In South Africa

Back at the airport, our trip to Africa which starts off quietly enough. The ladies take a 16-hour flight where they remove their makeup and have some wine. Cynthia even laughs when NeNe removes an eyebrow and NeNe doesn't seem to mind.

Or at least she didn't hurt her. Plus 8 for a good beginning.

NeNe says the group is divided between the tall women (over 5'9") and the almost midgets. It seems like an exaggeration until you witness Phaedra and Kandi standing next to Cynthia and NeNe and realize she's almost not kidding. Plus 5.

How much luggage do these women need for a 10-day trip? Watching them haul it through the airport is just ridiculous. They can't even manage an elevator without help. And we wonder why other countries think Americans are dumb. Minus 10.

The hotel penthouse suite is stunning but before they even get there Marlo is already bitching that she won't share a bathroom. Well, since the host didn't know she was coming she should be thankful she isn't sharing a bed with NeNe.

Cheers to Africa

The bus ride to the hotel has Marlo giving the ladies lessons in etiquette. How much etiquette do you think they teach in prison? Minus 12 because we doubt it has anything to do with the proper way to pass the salt.

Marlo wants the names of the hotel staff that will be servicing their room and she wants to know if they call out sick. I guess when you've got a criminal history you expect the same from those around you. Minus 7. It pays to be cautious but not rude.

Kandi's great as Marlo's getting on her last nerve. Over breakfast she asks "Are you going to give us etiquette lessons all day?" And then she looks as though she'd like to throw Marlo overboard while they're on the yacht. Plus 10.

We never thought much of Cynthia but she hit an all time low this week. First she mocks Phaedra's robe over breakfast and then she gloats over how she was invited to Sheree's friend's dinner while NeNe and Marlo were not.

Minus 15 because the girl couldn't make it across the penthouse fast enough to share the news. Talk about a trouble maker.

Kim and KJ

Unsurprisingly, Marlo storms off to give Sheree a piece of her mind. The two women can't stop screeching at one another sniping about one anothers money and sexual history. It's all about how many houses, cars, and watches they have.

Minus 12. How about we count how many brain cells each has. That will be quicker.

As the rest of the group gapes at the brawling duo, NeNe delivers one of the best lines of the night: "Is this how I look in an argument because they look absolutely stupid."

Plus 10 for realizing it.

As Marlo yells for Sheree to go off and spend the night with her bleeping gay friends using a word that rhymes with maggot, Kandi gets the best dig in of the night. "Now I don't know etiquette but I know you're not suppose to say that."

It's all so stupid that it's actually entertaining and it almost has us looking forward to the rest of this African adventure.

T-Mobile's Sensation, Amaze 4G, myTouch Q and others reportedly 'nearing end-of-life'

T-Mobile EOL list

T-Mobile USA may be preparing to wrap up sales of a handful of its mid to high-end Android devices, if a leaked internal screenshot is to be believed. The leaked photo, obtained by TmoNews, appears to show part of an internal stock system. In it, the following devices are marked as "nearing EOL", meaning "end-of-life" status --

End-of-life status means that a phone will no longer be stocked, meaning it'll likely have been replaced by something newer and shinier. What it doesn't affect, however, is software and hardware support. The Sensation, for example, is still scheduled to receive an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, and if true, the news that it may reach EOL in the near future doesn't change that. Nevertheless, it's surprising to see phones like the myTouch Q and Amaze 4G nearing EOL already, given that they've only been on sale since October.

It's also true that even after a phone is EOLed, sales will continue as long as there's stock remaining in outlets. So we're willing to bet you'll still see these devices in T-Mobile stores for a few more months. Right now, the biggest question centers on what T-Mobile will be replacing them with later in the year.

Canon's president steps down as earnings outlook falters (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Canon Inc said on Monday its president Tsuneji Uchida would step down and his role would be taken on by chairman and chief executive Fujio Mitarai after the camera and printer maker forecast much weaker-than-expected earnings growth for this year.

Like other Japanese exporters, Canon, which makes 80 percent of its revenue overseas, has been buffeted by the strong yen, a weak economic outlook and the floods in Thailand, although it has been quite aggressive in countering these challenges by cutting costs and increasing automation.

"Owing to the historically high valuation of the yen combined with the effects of the earthquake and floods, all of Canon's businesses faced extremely demanding conditions throughout the year," the company said in a statement.

Canon said Uchida would resign effective March 29, to be replaced by Mitarai, who served as president from 1995 to 2006 but has since held the post of chairman.

Canon forecast a full-year operating profit of 390 billion yen ($5.1 billion) for the current year to December 2012, below expectations of a 470 billion yen profit based on the average of 20 estimates by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company also posted a slightly better-than-forecast 14 percent rise in fourth-quarter operating profit to 94.6 billion yen, in line with consensus expectations.

Operating profit for the full year to December was 378.1 billion yen, down from 387.5 billion yen in the previous year but beating the average of 20 analyst forecasts for a profit of 372 billion yen.

Canon, which competes with Xerox in printers and Nikon and Sony Corp in cameras, aims to sell 9.2 million interchangeable lens cameras and 22 million compact cameras in the year to December, compared with 7.2 million and 18.7 million, respectively, last year.

Its shares have fallen about 18 percent since the start of last year, slightly worse than the benchmark Nikkei average's 14 percent drop.

Xerox lowered its outlook for 2012 this month, on expectations that the debt crisis in Europe would hurt its business.

Neeson's "Grey" wins box office weekend (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Survival story "The Grey" starring Liam Neeson in a battle against weather and wolves led the box office pack with a better-than-expected $20 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

"The Grey" knocked last weekend's winner, "Underworld: Awakening," to second place. The vampire and werewolf sequel starring Kate Beckinsale brought in $12.5 million from Friday through Sunday at domestic theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters on Sunday.

In "The Grey," Neeson returns to an action role as a man who leads a team of plane crash survivors who must fight harsh weather and a fierce pack of wolves in the Alaskan wilderness.

The movie played at 3,185 North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters and earned a per-theater average of $6,279, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com.

Distributor Open Road Films acquired the film for about $5 million and had projected up to $12 million in debut weekend sales. The film beat that forecast because "it doesn't look like every other movie out there. In a crowded marketplace, I think it's important to be distinctive," said Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenburg.

Katherine Heigl's new comedy, "One for the Money," finished in third place with $11.8 million, topping industry forecasts of less than $10 million for the film based on a best-selling book by Janet Evanovich. Distributor Lions Gate Entertainment said readers who loved the book helped the movie beat expectations.

"We think the audience that showed up are not frequent moviegoers. They're just huge fans of Janet Evanovich," said David Spitz, head of domestic distribution for Lions Gate.

In the film, Heigl plays a cash-strapped woman who joins a bail-bond business and must track down a wanted man who happens to be an ex-boyfriend. Audiences surveyed by exit polling firm CinemaScore game the movie a B-minus on average.

OSCAR BOOST

The weekend's other new movie, crime drama "Man on a Ledge," landed in fifth place. The film was distributed by Lions Gate's newly acquired Summit Entertainment unit as release dates and marketing plans were set well before the studios combined earlier this month.

"Man on a Ledge" took in $8.3 million, within studio forecasts. The movie features "Avatar" star Sam Worthington as a fugitive who threatens to jump from a hotel ledge.

"Red Tails," a drama about black fighter pilots in World War Two, brought in $10.4 million to land in fourth place in its second weekend in theaters.

Also this weekend, a crop of films capitalized off last week's Oscar nominations.

"The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a father dealing with a family crisis, expanded to 2,001 theaters from 560 and gained 176 percent from last weekend. The movie took in $6.6 million, lifting its domestic tally to $58.5 million since its release last November. The movie has added $27 million in international markets for a worldwide total of $85.5 million.

Black-and-white silent film "The Artist" increased its weekend sales by 40 percent from a week earlier, bringing in $3.3 million after adding 235 more screens. To date, the film has grossed $16.7 million domestically.

Family film "Hugo," which led the Oscar nominations with 11, also jumped 143 percent to $2.3 million. Its total sales to date stand at $58.7 million domestically.

Open Road Films, a joint venture between theater owners Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Entertainment Inc, released "The Grey." The film unit of Sony Corp distributed "Underworld: Awakening." "Red Tails" and "The Descendants" were released by divisions of News Corp's Fox Filmed Entertainment. Privately-held The Weinstein Co released "The Artist," and Viacom Inc unit Paramount Pictures distributed "Hugo."

IMF chief presses for more cash to fight crisis

(AP) ? The head of the International Monetary Fund appeared to be making headway Saturday in her drive to boost the institution's financial firepower so that it can help Europe prevent its crippling debt crisis from further damaging the global economy.

Christine Lagarde, who replaced Dominique Strauss-Kahn as managing director of the fund six months ago, is trying to ramp up the IMF's resources by $500 billion so it can help if more lending is needed in Europe or elsewhere. The IMF is the world's traditional lender-of-last-resort and has been involved in the bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Insisting that the IMF is a "safe bet" and that no country had ever lost money by lending to the IMF, Lagarde argued that increasing the size of the IMF's resources would help improve confidence in the global financial system. If enough money is in the fund the markets will be reassured and it won't be used, she said, using arguments similar to those that France has made about increasing Europe's own rescue fund.

"It's for that reason that I am here, with my little bag, to actually collect a bit of money," she said at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps town of Davos.

Her plea appeared to find a measure of support from ministers of Britain and Japan, sizable IMF shareholders that would be expected to contribute to any money-raising exercise.

George Osborne, Britain's finance minister, said there is "a case for increasing IMF resources and ... demonstrating that the world wants to help together to solve the world's problems," provided the 17 countries that use the euro show the "color of their money."

European countries have said they're prepared to give the IMF $150 billion, meaning that the rest of the world will have to contribute $350 billion. However, many countries, such as Britain and the U.S., want Europe to do more, notably by boosting its own rescue fund.

Osborne said he would be willing to argue in Parliament for a new British contribution, though he may encounter opposition from some members from his own Conservative Party.

Japan's economy minister, Motohisa Furukawa, said his country would help the eurozone via the IMF, too, even though Japan's own debt burden is massive. Unlike Europe's debt-ridden economies, Japan doesn't face sky-high borrowing rates, partly because there's a very liquid domestic market that continues to support the country's bonds.

Europe once again dominated discussions on the final full day of the forum in Davos. Despite some optimism about Europe's latest attempts to stem the crisis, fears remain that turmoil could return.

Whether the markets remain stable could rest for now on if Greece, the epicenter of the crisis, manages to conclude crucial debt-reduction discussions with its private creditors. It's also seeking to placate demands from its European partners and the IMF for deeper reforms.

A failure on either front could force the country, which is now in its fifth year of recession, to default on its debt and leave the euro, potentially triggering another wave of mayhem in financial markets that could hit the global economy hard.

One German official even said Saturday that Greece should temporarily cede sovereignty over tax and spending decisions to a powerful eurozone budget commissioner to secure further bailouts. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because talks on the idea are confidential.

"The fact that we're still, at the start of 2012, talking about Greece again is a sign that this problem has not been dealt with," Britain's Osborne said.

For Donald Tsang, the chief executive of Hong Kong, efforts to deal with the 2-year-old debt crisis have fallen short of what is required. The failure to properly deal with the Greek situation quickly has meant the ultimate cost to Europe has been higher, he said.

"I have never been as scared as now about the world," he said.

Most economic forecasters predict that the global economy will continue to grow this year, but at a fairly slow rate. The IMF recently reduced its forecasts for global growth in 2012 to 3.3 percent, from the 4 percent pace that the IMF projected in September.

Lagarde sought to encourage some countries that use the euro to boost growth to help shore up the ailing eurozone economy, which is widely expected to sink back into recession, adding that it would be counterproductive if all euro countries cut their budgets aggressively at the same time.

"Some countries have to go full-speed ahead to do this fiscal consolidation ... but other countries have space and room," Lagarde said.

Though conceding that there aren't many such countries, Lagarde said it is important that those that have the headroom explore how they can boost growth. She carefully avoided naming any countries, but likely had in mind Germany, Europe's largest economy and a major world exporter. She didn't specify how to boost growth or how one eurozone country could help others grow.

Lagarde said members of the eurozone should continue the drive to tie their economies closer together. On Monday, European leaders gather in Brussels in the hopes of agreeing on a treaty that will force member countries to put deficit limits into their national laws.

Britain's Osborne said eurozone leaders should be praised for the "courage" they have shown over the past few months in enacting austerity and setting in place closer fiscal ties, but said more will have to be done if the single currency is to get on a surer footing.

Fiscal transfers from rich economies to poorer ones will become a "permanent feature" of the eurozone, Osborne predicted.

While politicians and business people were discussing the state of the global economy within the confines of the conference center, protesters questioned the purpose of the event as income inequalities grow worldwide.

Protesters from the Occupy movement that started on Wall Street have camped out in igloos at Davos and were demonstrating in front of City Hall to call attention to the needs of the poor and unemployed.

In a separate protest, three Ukrainian women were arrested when they stripped off their tops ? despite temperatures around freezing ? and tried to climb a fence surrounding the invitation-only gathering of international CEOs and political leaders.

"Crisis! Made in Davos," read one message painted across a protester's torso.

Davos police spokesman Thomas Hobi said the three women were taken to the police station and told they weren't allowed to demonstrate. He said they would be released later in the day.

Golf roundup | Tiger opens season with a solid round

No momentous shots for Tiger Woods. No bogeys, either.

The 14-time major winner opened his 2012 season with a solid first round Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in the United Arab Emirates, shooting a 2-under 70 that left him three strokes behind co-leader Rory McIlroy, his playing partner.

?Hit the ball well all day today. It was a good ball-striking round,? Woods said. ?I had a hard time reading the greens out there. The greens were pretty grainy, and I just had a hard time getting a feel for it. Toward the end, I hit some pretty good putts, but overall I got fooled a lot on my reads.?

ASSOCIATED PRESS Tiger Woods, left, and Rory McIlroy survey the 10th green Thursday during the first round of Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

McIlroy shot a 67, as did Robert Karlsson. But the best shots of the day came from Sergio Garcia (71) and Jose Manuel Lara (70) -- each had a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th hole.

Gareth Maybin, Richard Finch and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet were one shot behind the two leaders. Top-ranked Luke Donald, who played alongside Woods and McIlroy, shot a 71. Second-ranked Lee Westwood (72) and fourth-ranked Martin Kaymer (77) had poor starts and never challenged.

McIlroy, the U.S. Open champion from Northern Ireland, had three birdies on his first four holes but erratic driving led to two bogeys on the next four. He steadied himself with three birdies on his back nine, including a chip-in on No. 8 from just off the green.

Woods missed several birdie chances, including a 6-footer on his ninth, the 18th hole. He also struggled with his approach shots on a course that was playing tougher than usual with its thick rough, resulting in many 25- and 30-footers coming up short.

PGA -- Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley knew they had to post low scores on the easier North Course at Torrey Pines to get off to a good start in the Farmers Insurance Open. It went even better than they expected.

Stanley made eagle on his final hole for a 10-under 62, his best score in two years on the PGA Tour. Levin shot 29 on the back nine and had a 62, matching his career best on tour.

They were a shot ahead of FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas, who had a double bogey on his 15th hole and still managed a 63. The top 12 on the leaderboard played the North, which played slightly more than 3 1/2 strokes easier than the South Course, which hosted the U.S. Open four years ago.

The best score from the South was Marc Turnesa at 66.

Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, went south on the South. The three-time champion and San Diego favorite thought his game was rounding into form when he came home from the Humana Challenge. Instead, he hit into 11 bunkers, missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the final hole and signed for a 77. It was his highest score at Torrey Pines since a 78 in the third round of 2005.

A year ago, the fairways were pinched in and the rough was unusually high on the North Course, helping to make up for the 604-yard difference between the two courses. Based on the scores, that?s no longer the case.

Vijay Singh, Rod Pampling, Josh Teater and PGA Tour rookie John Huh were at 64, with Huh making three eagles.

SOLHEIM CUP -- Meg Mallon is the next U.S. captain for the Solheim Cup. She is a four-time major champion, including two U.S. Women?s Open titles, and she played in the Solheim Cup eight times. Her overall record was 13-9-7, including 5-2-1 in singles. She is second only to Juli Inkster in most Solheim Cup points earned by an American.

Outside Syria's capital, suburbs look like war zone

When Arab League observers headed to the suburbs of Damascus on Thursday, Syrian security refused to accompany them to most areas, because they are no longer in control there.

In some towns no more than a 15-minute drive from the capital, the governor of rural Damascus warned that gunmen were walking the streets.

But the monitors went, accompanied by journalists, to the outskirts of Irbin and Harasta, which have become hotbeds for protests and armed revolt since the 10-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began.

At a checkpoint on an intersection heading into the town of Irbin, dozens of soldiers with assault rifles were deployed in full gear and on alert. On the sidewalk near them lay the bodies of two men shot dead, one of them a soldier.

But the soldiers were fixated nervously on the anti-Assad protest just hundreds of meters away, with protesters chanting "Allahu Akbar". Most shops were closed and people gave the Arab League monitors suspicious looks.

Video: Inside Syria: the untold story (on this page)

"Some people are angry with us because of the report," one observer said.

The observer team sent a report last week on their mission to check implementation of an Arab peace plan that aims to halt bloodshed from Assad's military crackdown on the unrest that the United Nations says has killed more than 5,000 people.

Syria says the revolt is run by foreign-backed militants that have killed over 2,000 of its forces.

While the Arab League came out with a strong statement calling for Assad to step down, many in the Syrian opposition were angry at the monitors' report, which highlighted violence by Assad's adversaries as much as by the government itself.

They said monitors neglected the balance of power in the struggle between protesters and rebels against the army.

ICRC: Red Crescent official shot dead in Syria

Reuters, which joined the monitors on their first observation trip since the report, is in Syria on a state-sponsored trip and is usually accompanied by a government minder.

The Arab observers watched the anti-Assad demonstration from afar, and minutes later they drove away towards a police hospital in Harasta, another flashpoint in the revolt.

The team head, Jaafar al-Kubaida, said the monitors did not enter Irbin because they were worried the "angry crowd" might harass them. "Teams are harassed sometimes, we feared they might attack the cars or throw stones at us. It has happened before."

Cars with 'Israeli bombs'
At the police hospital in Harasta, the staff said most of rural Damascus was not controlled by the government forces and gunmen were kidnapping and killing those affiliated with the government in those areas.

"Any car plate that belongs to the government cannot drive inside Harasta, we as doctors cannot go, they hijacked one of our cars a week ago," said a doctor in the hospital.

A soldier pointed at a mosque facing the checkpoint and said, "You see that mosque? Their snipers sometimes fire at us from there."

A senior officer said that security forces were in talks with the armed men through dignitaries in the towns, hoping to convince them to hand over their weapons. He said the government had not completely lost control of the Damascus countryside.

"No, you cannot say that they are in control of rural Damascus, they control areas and the army control areas," he told Reuters.

Elderly Syrian man dares to speak out to journalists then says 'I will disappear'

When Arab observers pressed a senior officer to allow them entry into the troubled town, he said it was too dangerous.

"The coordination (team) did not get back to us, we told them you wanted to go but still no reply from them, We want you to go to them under their protection," a senior officer told the monitors.

The monitors were frustrated they could not enter, but also said they were unsure if their presence was wanted after their first report. "We would love to go, but I'm not sure we are welcomed there," one observer told Reuters.

Security officials showed monitors three cars which they said were towed from inside Harasta and Douma. They said the vehicles were confiscated from "terrorists" and loaded with Israeli bombs.

Inside Harasta, the army was heavily deployed. Dozens of soldiers in full gear were deployed in a 1,650-foot-long street, their guns pointed up as they nervously watched the nearby houses. People peeked from their windows but few went out. The trash-littered streets was almost deserted.

"Free Syria" was written on a wall.

"Yes, it is not safe," said a veiled woman who was walking a man down the street. She looked worried and scared. "There are gunmen but we do not have the Free Syria Army here."

Starbucks 1Q profit up 10 percent on strong sales (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Starbucks Corp. reported its biggest quarterly revenue gain since the recession began, but investors worried after the company issued a modest forecast for the year.

The Seattle-based coffee company reported on Thursday after the stock markets closed that fiscal first-quarter revenue grew 16 percent ? the largest quarterly gain since 2007. It attracted new customers by adding stores in China and Morocco, upgrading locations in the U.S. and rolling out single-serve coffee and other new items at grocery stores.

"Starbucks is firing on all cylinders and taking full advantage of the many global opportunities that lie ahead," CEO Howard Schultz said in a statement.

Profit rose 10 percent to $382.1 million, or 50 cents per share, for the quarter that ended Jan. 1. That's up from $346.6 million, or 45 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue increased to $3.44 billion with growth from all its business lines.

Results beat the 49 cents per share on revenue of $3.29 billion that analysts expected, according to FactSet.

Starbucks said revenue from its stores open at least a year ? an important measure because it strips away the impact of recently opened or closed stores ? increased 9 percent as more customers visited its cafes and spent more each trip. It was the company's most successful holiday season ever, with customers buying more peppermint mochas, gingerbread lattes and Starbucks gift cards.

Starbucks also benefited from the addition of 241 new stores during the quarter. It now operates 17,244 stores worldwide, with plans to open another 800 in the coming year.

Additionally, Starbucks delivered major gains in its consumer products business, which sells its new single-serve coffee products, Via instant coffee, Starbucks ice cream and other items for sale in grocery stores and other retailers. Revenue from this segment increased 72 percent and Starbucks expects the business to continue to grow.

The solid quarterly performance was followed by a full-year forecast that was slightly below Wall Street expectations as Starbucks acknowledged that it continues to struggle with higher costs for coffee beans, dairy products and other ingredients it needs.

Starbucks said these costs were $105 million higher for the quarter than this time last year, sending its operating margins down from 17 percent to 16.2 percent for the quarter. Starbucks said commodity costs will add up to $230 million in costs for the full fiscal year but it anticipates the pressure will lesson in the second-half of the year.

Starbucks nudged up the lower-end of its earnings guidance. It now expects to earn $1.78 to $1.82 per share for the full year, up from prior guidance of $1.75 to $1.82 for the year. But it falls just short of analyst expectations of $1.83 per share, according to FactSet.

Jack Russo, an analyst with Edward Jones, said the modest outlook and lower margins drove some investors away in after-hours trading. On the news, the company's shares fell 54 cents to $47.80 after the markets closed.

Starbucks remains a strong growth company, Russo said, but the stock is already rich. It has hovered near record highs this week. Its shares have traded between $30.75 and $48.39 in the past 52 weeks.

Obama to focus on tax inequality in State of the Union (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will frame an election-year State of the Union address on Tuesday in starkly populist terms by calling for tax reform to get rid of inequalities that allow the wealthy to pay a lower rate than middle-class Americans.

His message follows the release of tax records by Mitt Romney, a potential Republican rival and one of the wealthiest men to ever run for the White House. With income mostly from investments, Romney pays an effective tax rate that is much lower than the top tax rates on wages.

"Millions of Americans who work hard and play by the rules every day deserve a government and a financial system that does the same," Obama said in advance excerpts for his 9 p.m. EST (0200 GMT Wednesday) speech to Congress.

"It's time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts."

Taxes are the most divisive issue at the heart of this year's election campaign. Obama, seeking a second term despite a slow economic recovery and a high jobless rate, hopes to tap into middle-class voters' resentment against Wall Street while their families are hurting.

Democrats have hammered Republicans in Congress for supporting tax breaks that favor the wealthy while Republicans staunchly oppose tax hikes, even on the richest Americans, arguing they would hurt a fragile economic recovery.

Obama was set to revive his call to rewrite the tax code to adopt the so-called "Buffett rule," named after the billionaire Warren Buffett, who supports the president and says it is unfair that he, Buffett, pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.

Obama is also expected to roll out new initiatives on easing the nation's home-mortgage crisis and reforming the corporate tax system.

Most of Obama's proposals will face stiff Republican resistance, limiting the chance of any headway in a divided Congress before the November 6 election.

Although Obama is fully aware of the legislative obstacles, his aides see this approach scoring political points by turning up the heat on Republicans he accuses of obstructing economic recovery.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by," Obama will say. "Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share."

The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.5 percent in December. No president in the modern era has won re-election with the rate that high.

US D Krieger not giving up hope for Olympics

updated 11:25 p.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

VANCOVUER, British Columbia - U.S. defender Ali Krieger says she's not giving up hope that she can play in the Olympics.

Krieger spoke to reporters for the first time Sunday since tearing the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her right knee during an Olympic qualifying match in Canada.

Krieger said she plans to fly home Monday so she can have her surgery as soon as possible. Her rehabilitation time is expected to be six to eight months, which likely rules her out for the Summer Games in London.

But Krieger says some athletes have returned from the injury sooner, and she'll work hard to do just that.

She was hurt during the Americans' 14-0 win over the Dominican Republic on Friday.

CyanogenMod Android app store coming soon (Digital Trends)

CyanogenMod App Store ScreenshotThe popular Android custom ROM known as CyanogenMod could soon benefit from its own application store, following the embracing of an idea suggested by one of the team members recently. Posting to his Google+ account, Koushik Dutta said an independent store would be a much-needed source of income for CyanogenMod, which is now active on more than a million Android phones.

But rather than offer the same old apps available through the official Android Market, the CyanogenMod store would be home to apps specifically suited to rooted Android phones, plus offer an outlet for those that have been refused access or have been removed from Google?s store.

For example, this would include applications that simplify the rooting process, games console emulators and apps that networks don?t approve of, such as those used for tethering. According to Dutta, the store would only contain legal apps, so shouldn?t provide safe-haven for apps removed from the Market due to security concerns.

The decision to open their own store comes after conversations with Amazon failed to progress to something meaningful. Originally, CyanogenMod toyed with the idea of bundling Amazon?s store with their custom ROM, in return for a cut of application revenue, but Amazon wouldn?t commit to a time frame.

Work has now begun of the CyanogenMod App Store, a name we?d assume won?t be attached to the final product, but it still looks to be early days judging by the screenshot.

Emma Roberts Channels Ke$ha In 'Celeste And Jesse'

'I got to bring together every pop star and mold it into one person,' actress tells MTV News.
By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Elijah Wood and Emma Roberts

PARK CITY, UtahEmma Roberts has always been a friend to MTV News, particularly at the Sundance Film Festival. Last year in Park City, we were fairly sure that we got Emma to drop a massive "Scream 4" spoiler — namely that she wasn't going to survive her encounter with Ghost Face — and we were right ... partially.

At this year's Sundance, our conversation with Emma was not so grim. The up-and-coming actress has a starring role in "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a comedy about a divorcing couple struggling to maintain their friendship during an intense period of transition. In the film, which also stars co-writer Rashida Jones, Roberts goes against type as a pop star named Riley, who is an amalgamation of various musical icons. But according to the actress, there's one particular singer she took her cues from.

"I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person," she told MTV News about her role in the film. "[But] my hair is definitely Ke$ha. I have these fabulous long, blond, slightly ratty extensions. I miss those dearly."

Of course, hair alone does not make a pop star. Roberts had to sing and dance to get into the role, rocking out with a dance anthem that was co-written by Jones herself.

"We recorded a song that Rashida co-wrote with a bunch of people, and it's just wildly entertaining and inappropriate and it's kind of a dance anthem. It was fun," she said. "You know when you listen to songs and they yell at you to have fun? That's kind of what we decided to do, because I love being yelled at to have fun and dance!" Who doesn't?

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Keep it locked with MTV Movies for everything there is to know about Sundance.

FileSonic Just Killed Itself By Disabling File Sharing [Piracy]

In what looks like a preventive measure in reaction to the Megaupload shutdown, FileSonic has disabled all file sharing capabilities and is now nothing more than a personal storage solution. It looks like the Feds' tactic of going after the big fish in Megaupload is beginning to scare other file sharing sites into shutting down. More »

Gingrich upends Republican race in South Carolina (Reuters)

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Newt Gingrich jolted the Republican presidential race on Saturday with a convincing come-from-behind victory in South Carolina, where voters rejected frontrunner Mitt Romney's pitch that he is the best bet to fix a broken economy and defeat President Barack Obama.

Gingrich's win injects unexpected volatility into a Republican nominating race that until this week appeared to be a coronation for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and private-equity chief.

Three different candidates now have won the first three contests in the state-by-state battle for the Republican presidential nomination to face Obama, a Democrat, on November 6.

Former senator Rick Santorum won the Iowa caucuses on January 3 and Romney won the New Hampshire primary on January 10. Gingrich fared poorly in both those states and had trailed badly in South Carolina polls.

Riding a series of feisty debate performances, Gingrich captured the lingering unease of conservative voters in South Carolina who view Romney's moderate past and shifting policy stances with suspicion. The former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives argued that he would be able to better articulate the party's conservative ideals.

With 65 percent of the vote counted, Gingrich had pulled in 41 percent of the vote, followed by Romney with 26 percent, networks reported. Santorum was in third with 18 percent and U.S. congressman Ron Paul in fourth with 13 percent.

Gingrich contrasted his sometimes-chaotic management style with Romney's buttoned-down approach, arguing that his campaign was powered by ideas rather than logistics.

U.S. television networks declared Gingrich the winner shortly after polls closed at 7 p.m. EST (0000 GMT).

"We have a very real chance on an idea basis as conservatives to offer a better future for the American people. We have an ability to reach out to lots of people and communicate with them without millions of dollars of paid advertising," Gingrich said on Fox Business Network.

"This race is getting to be even more interesting," Romney told supporters.

"We're now three contests into a long primary season," he added in a speech in which he took several shots at Gingrich, including condemning Republican rivals for assaulting free enterprise as they criticized his business resume.

FLORIDA IS NEXT

The next contest is the Florida primary on January 31. It will be the largest state yet in the nomination battle and one that will require the candidates to spend quite a bit of money on advertising.

Romney starts off with a wide lead in the polls in Florida and a distinct edge in logistics and fund-raising, which will be crucial in a state that has 10 separate media markets.

A drawn-out Republican contest would likely help Obama as Republican candidates would continue to spend time and money attacking each other.

Obama, who does not face a primary challenger, will have his turn in the spotlight on Tuesday with his State of the Union address. In a message to supporters on Saturday, he said the speech would focus on "building an economy that works for everybody, not just a wealthy few.

Animosity between Gingrich and Romney has been festering since December, when a group supporting Romney launched a blitz of negative TV ads in Iowa that effectively ruined Gingrich's campaign there.

In South Carolina, a state with a reputation for rough and tumble politics, the gloves came off.

Gingrich attacked Romney's business record and reluctance to release personal tax information, while Romney pointed to Gingrich's past ethics lapses and alluded to his messy personal life.

Voters said they were overwhelmingly focused on fixing the sluggish economy and finding the strongest candidate to defeat Obama. Some 78 percent said they were "very worried" about the economy and 45 percent said that the most important trait in a candidate was the ability to beat Obama, according to exit polls released by CNN.

Those issues are the twin pillars of Romney's candidacy.

Romney had developed an aura of inevitability after strong showings in the first two nominating contests, and he led South Carolina polls by 10 percentage points a week ago.

He suffered a setback on Thursday when Iowa officials declared in a recount that he had come in second place in that state's January 3 contest, behind Santorum, instead of winning narrowly as initially announced.

Romney is among the richest men ever to run for the U.S. presidency and his stewardship of the private equity firm Bain Capital has been criticized by Gingrich and others.

"If Republican leaders want to join this president in demonizing success and disparaging conservative values then they are not going to be fit to be our nominee," Romney told supporters.

Voters said they viewed Romney's business background as an asset. But he waffled this week when asked whether he would release his tax records, and acknowledged that he pays a much lower tax rate than many Americans.

'PUNCH IN THE MOUTH'

"This is the punch in the mouth/wake up call Romney needed if he wanted to be a strong general election candidate," Republican strategist Ford O'Connell said in a Twitter message, referring to the South Carolina results.

Romney attacked Gingrich's ties to mortgage giant Freddie Mac and criticized his time in the nation's capital. His campaign also highlighted Gingrich's $300,000 fine due to ethics lapses while serving as House speaker 15 years ago.

The thrice-married Gingrich has fended off publicity about his turbulent marital history. On Thursday, he rejected his second wife's accusation that he had asked her for an "open marriage" while he was having an affair with another woman in the 1990s.

South Carolina has been a tough state for Romney's presidential ambitions. In his previous run for the White House in 2008, Romney finished a poor fourth, with just 15 percent of the vote, behind winner and eventual Republican nominee John McCain. McCain endorsed Romney in the current campaign.

The winner of South Carolina's Republican presidential primary has gone on to win the party's nomination in every presidential election since 1980.

Camera Genius 4.2 (for iPhone)

We last looked at Camera Genius over two years ago, when the iPhone's built-in camera was fair to middling at best. The latest version of iOS added some nifty camera capabilities, so it's a good time to revisit Camera Genius, now at version 4.2, to see whether you still need third-party software to get the most out of your iPhone photos. The app's capabilities fall into three main categories?shooting, editing, and sharing. As we'll see, this mature and capable app still adds to what iPhone's native Camera app can do in all three of these areas. But is it the best choice?

Shooting
Several of Camera Genius's shooting features add ways to snap the camera's shutter. Before Apple iOS 5, there was a bevy of apps that would enlarge or turn the whole screen into a shutter button, so that you could snap a picture while holding the phone away from your face, as when you take a picture including yourself. Camera Genius still offers this, but since iOS 5 added the ability to shoot with the Volume Up button and the iPhone 4 and 4S's front camera made it less critical. If you're using a 3GS or? lower, this app holds more value. One thing Genius offers that its rival Camera+ doesn?t: It lets you trigger the shutter with noise or as soon as the camera focuses on the spot your finger touches. Both offer timers.

Anti-Shake is another shooting assist. This doesn't actually add any stabilization technology to the iPhone's camera, but instead delays the shutter from going off until you're holding the smartphone still. In my testing, this worked quite well. The iPhone 4S's between-shot time is already pretty excellent, but Camera Genius lets you shoot three photos in as rapid succession as the camera allows, with one tap of the shutter. I found Camera+'s burst mode even more useful, though: Because it lowers the image resolution, it can take more pictures faster, but with, of course, lower-res resulting images.

One of the cleverer tools in Camera Genius's kit is the ability to separate the point of focus from the point of exposure, though I can't think of when this would be useful, and the capability is matched by Camera+. In fact, most of what I've mentioned before this, and much of the edits and effects I'll mention later, can also be found in the competing Camera+ app, which has an even more appealing design.

Finally, for the organizers, you can also stamp images with date, time, and location. The timestamp looks a lot nicer that what point-and-shoots are known for, with an attractive, understated white font. It's something not offered by the competition we tested, so if this appeals to you, Camera Genius is a good choice.

One shooting option that the built-in iPhone Camera app can boast but Camera Genius lacks is HDR. Though the Apple version of HDR is far from ideal, often making photos blurrier and seldom yielding and impressive result, it's still an omission on CodeGoo's part. CG does have an after-the-face Pseudo HDR effect, but that didn't do much for my test images.

Editing
Camera Genius brings all the image adjustment options we've come to expect from even rudimentary photo-editing software?cropping, brightness, contrast, colors. But it lacks more sophisticated options you find in Snapseed ($4.99, 4 stars), such as sharpening, saturation, straightening, and white balance control. Nor does Genius offer localized editing on just certain areas of a photo.

When it comes to blinging up your photo with striking effects, Camera Genius can nearly hold its own against the likes of Instagram and Hipstamatic, with options like Grime, Cracked, Lomography, Wild, and Goth. And those are just options in the Adjust settings: You get 24 more in the Effects set, including Aged, Cross Process, and Grunge. Camera+ goes it a little better in the effect department, with 27 options.

Sharing
Camera Genius offers a generous selection of sharing options. You can send photos directly to Flickr, Facebook, Picasa, Twitter, or Tumblr (Camera+ subtracts Picasa and Tumblr from that list). But when I posted a picture to Flickr, it arrived with a long ugly number as the photo title.? Nevertheless, these sharing capabilities alone could make Camera Genius worth buying: The native iPhone Camera app only lets you e-mail or send to Twitter, which is hardly the top online photo sharing option. But for sharing, it's hard to beat Instagram, which boasts its own immersive social network and links to the other major ones.

Is Camera Genius a Smart Choice?
What I really wish a camera app would do for the iPhone is let you set ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Then it could really be a point-and-shoot replacement. Apple apparently hasn't made these settings available to app developers. Pity. Till these come, Camera Genius can definitely add to the process of shooting photos and fancying them up afterwards. On the latter step, though, our Editors' Choice, Snapseed from Nik, offers more options and more control, as does Camera+, which offers nearly all the shooting features of Camera Genius in a slightly better interface and more embellishment choices.

Russian billionaires' huge legal battle closes (AP)

LONDON ? A legal battle between two feuding Russian billionaires has ended in a London court.

Judge Elizabeth Gloster reserved judgment Thursday on the case between exiled oligarch Boris Berezovsky and fellow Russian Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea Football Club owner.

The date for the verdict has not been set.

Berezovsky sued Abramovich for several billion dollars, saying the soccer club owner had intimidated him into selling shares in their jointly-owned Russian oil giant Sibneft at a fraction of their value. He alleged breach of contract and claimed more than 3 billion pounds (US$4.6 billion) in damages.

Abramovich denied that, saying Berezovsky never owned the stakes.

The trial, which began in October, is one of the most expensive legal fights London has seen.

Second "Absolutely Fabulous" special airs February 6 on Logo (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Mark February 6 on your calendars and put the Bolly on ice, sweetie darlings, because Patsy and Edina are coming back to the small screen.

The second of three "Absolutely Fabulous" specials to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the British series will air February 6 at 10:30 p.m. on Logo, the network announced Wednesday.

The second special, entitled "Job" (the first special, "Identity," premiered January 8), finds Edina struggling to make up for her new client's lack of talent, with an assist from the artist formerly known as Baby Spice.

"Edina takes on a celebrity client who wants to sing. When Edina discovers how awful her client's voice really is, she'll need to recruit some help from her other clients, Emma Bunton from the 'Spice Girls' and Lulu, to help prepare the client for her upcoming debut," a summary of the episode from Logo reads.

In addition to the three specials -- which are co-produced by BBC America and Logo -- series star Jennifer Saunders (aka Edina Monsoon) revealed plans for an "Absolutely Fabulous" movie last November.

"We thought it would be hilarious if went to a party on an oligarch's yacht, got drunk, fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the ocean," Saunders said of the film's potential plot. "Everyone else has left, and the ship has been moved on."

The special will be preceded by new episodes of "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "Untucked!: RuPaul's Drag Race."

Brigham and Women's Hospital researcher tests new treatments for seasonal affective disorder

Boston If winter's long nights and cold weather have you feeling depressed, a new research study could lift your spirits. The study, lead by Janis Anderson, PH.D., an associate psychologist in the Brigham and Women's Hospital Department of Psychiatry, aims to help adult (ages 21-64) men and women with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by comparing two new types of light technologies to determine which one works better.

For decades, researchers have known that exposing patients to bright light can alleviate the seasonal depression associated with SAD, but the technology to treat SAD has evolved considerably over the years. Today's high-tech light boxes are increasingly small, portable and powerful. This change may give a growing number of patients access to treatment.

Enrollment of 40 volunteers for the trial is now underway at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Participants who usually develop clinical depression in the fall and winter will receive, at no cost to them, a form a light therapy. The effectiveness of the new technology will be measured over a period of six weeks to determine the effectiveness at reducing the symptoms of SAD.
