Ryan throws 3 TDs, Falcons hold off Vikings 24-14

(AP) ? Mike Smith cracked a joke after the Falcons held on for another win that was probably closer than it should've been.

"We make it exciting enough for you?" the Atlanta coach said, managing a smile.

Then he took a swig of water and breathed a sigh of relief. His team held on in a game it absolutely couldn't afford to lose.

Matt Ryan tossed three touchdown passes and the Falcons came through with a goal-line stand after Percy Harvin's 104-yard kickoff return, preserving a 24-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Atlanta (7-4) had to beat the lowly Vikings to maintain its spot in a tight NFC playoff race. Minnesota (2-9) didn't appear much of a threat without star running back Adrian Peterson, who was sidelined by a sprained left ankle. To make matter worse for the visiting team, three more players went down to injuries in the first half.

The game started according to plan for the Falcons, who raced to a 17-0 lead by halftime. Ryan hooked up with Harry Douglas on a 27-yard touchdown and Roddy White on a 6-yarder. The Vikings had only two first downs and 38 yards until their final possession of the first half, when they padded their numbers a bit against the prevent defense. Even then, Minnesota went to the locker room with five first downs and 97 yards.

Instead of putting the Vikings away, the Falcons let them back in the game.

"We know we're a lot better than that," tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "Sooner or later we're going to hit our stride."

Toby Gerhart, filling in for Peterson, scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter. Then, after Dominique Franks inadvertently touched a punt the Falcons were trying to run away from, allowing the Vikings to recover, Christian Ponder went to Harvin for a 39-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-13 to make it 17-14.

Ryan responded with two long completions to White before hitting backup tight end Michael Palmer with a 3-yard touchdown that extended the lead with 6:40 remaining.

Still, the Vikings wouldn't go away.

Harvin took the ensuing kickoff 7 yards deep in the end zone, found a wall of blockers to the right and took off right in front of the Falcons bench. Christopher Owens made a diving tackle at the 3, and that might've saved the Falcons.

"That was the most pivotal play of the game," Smith said. "We were able to put our defense out there and live to play another play."

The Vikings got it to the 1 and decided to go for the touchdown on fourth down. But Sean Weatherspoon burst into the backfield and stuffed Gerhart right after he took the handoff, throwing him for a 2-yard loss. The Falcons ran out the clock.

"When the guy comes screaming off the edge like that, you have no chance," Gerhart said.

The game was a near repeat of Atlanta's performance the previous week against Tennessee, and doesn't bode well for this team ? considered a Super Bowl contender before the season ? making a long run in the playoffs even if they do get in.

The Falcons built a 20-point lead on the Titans but staggered to the finish, barely preserving a 23-17 win.

Now, another close call.

"At the end of the day, we had more points than they did," Smith said. "That's the most important stat."

Vikings rookie coach Leslie Frazier admitted it was mistake to go for a touchdown on fourth down, instead of kicking a chip-shot field goal that would've made it a one-score game.

"That's purely on me," he said. "I let my emotions get the best of me."

The Vikings looked a lot better over the final two quarters than they did in the first two, though they were still outgained 335-226 in total yards.

"The first half was ugly," Gerhart said. "There's no rhythm. We came back after halftime and wanted to get the ball back and wanted to get a little momentum. Unfortunately, they stopped that momentum at the end of the game."

Ryan completed 27 of 34 for 262 yards and had his best efficiency rating of the season. White, showing signs of turning around a disappointing season, had his second straight big game with 10 catches for 120 yards.

"It's kind of the nature of NFL. Teams execute at a high level and things are going exactly as planned. Then there are times where you don't execute as well as you would like," Ryan said. "The most important thing is how we responded to that and played in the fourth quarter. We did a great job when we needed to score."

Ponder was 17 of 25 for 186 yards but was sacked four times and had to scramble away from pressure several more times. Gerhart managed only 44 yards rushing, while Harvin had eight catches for 95 yards to go along with his big play on the kickoff, which was the longest non-scoring return in the NFL since at least 1991.

Since then, according to STATS LLC, Kevin Faulk in 1999 and Eddie Royal three seasons ago had the longest returns that failed to reach the end zone, each covering 95 yards.

NOTES: Falcons CB Brent Grimes (right knee) went out in the first half and didn't return. ... The Vikings lost S Tyrell Johnson (hamstring), CB Asher Allen (shoulder) and deep snapper Cullen Loeffler (back). DE Jared Allen took over the snapping duties from Loeffler. ... Harvin took advantage when the Falcons dropped linebacker Curtis Lofton into coverage on the fourth-and-13. He had no chance of keeping up with the speedy receiver. "We'll take that matchup every day," Ponder said.

BUENA VISTA GETS HER JAPAN CUP
???
Buena Vista (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}) hit the line first in the 2010 G1 Japan Cup before losing the victory by way of the stewards' room, but in 2011, there would be nothing between her and glory in one of the crown jewels of Japanese racing. The 5-year-old mare, Japan's reigning Horse of the Year, found a narrow seam in mid-stretch and powered through, and gamely fought past a tough-as-nails Tosen Jordan (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) to prevail by a neck in the 31st renewal of the Cup. The slight 2-1 second choice in local pools, Buena Vista was registering her first win of the year. "I knew she was the best. I always believed in her," said the mare's 65-year-old trainer, Hiroyoshi Matsuda. The 105-1 bomb Jaguar Mail (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) finished third. Germany's super filly Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {Ger}), favored off her win in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, never really fired and finished a flat sixth.

Locals Sweep First Five Placings...
???
With the presence of Danedream and Shareta (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}), the Arc 1-2, as well as recent GI Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and U.S. Grade I winner Mission Approved (With Approval), the 2011 Japan Cup had a strong international presence. But local runners dominated the proceedings, claiming the first five spots. For Buena Vista, the crowd-thrilling victory was a validation of her brilliant 4-year-old season.
???Runner-up in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in 2010 and winner of the G1 Victoria Mile and G1 Tenno Sho Autumn, Buena Vista crossed the line 1 3/4 lengths in advance of Rose Kingdom (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) in the Japan Cup 12 months ago. But stewards ruled that the Christophe Soumillon-piloted Buena Vista had come in under a right-handed drive and took her number down (video) despite what appeared to be a comprehensive win. Buena Vista then finished a nose back of Victoire Pisa (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) in the G1 Arima Kinen a month later, but despite those two tough defeats, had done enough to secure Horse of the Year honors. Still, the Japan Cup demotion clearly was a painful blow to Buena Vista's connections.?

Road to Redemption...
???
Kept in training for the 2011 season, Buena Vista endured a further series of frustrating efforts. She finished eighth, beaten 3 3/4 lengths, when tried on Meydan's Tapeta in the G1 Dubai World Cup in March, then was beaten a neck when trying to defend her title in the G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo in May. Second again in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin in June, she was favored in her return in the G1 Tenno Sho Autumn at Tokyo Oct. 30, but had to settle for fourth, beaten 1 3/4 lengths, by Tosen Jordan. Despite going winless on the year, connections held faith in Buena Vista.
???"She had not been 100% in the Tenno Sho, and had trouble [in the race]," said her trainer Matsuda. "To have finished fourth under those conditions just gave me more confidence in her ability."
???The local crowd held faith, too, sending her off at odds of 2.40-1 in the Japan Cup (she was a longer 5-1 in North American-based pools), just above favored Danedream's 2.30-1 price.

How the Race Was Won...
???
The Cup began with the U.S.'s Mission Approved taking his customary spot at the front, while Buena Vista, breaking from the two hole, ambled out and secured an ideal ground-saving trip. Danedream, from stall 13, was a bit crowded at the break, but settled nicely in and amongst horses toward the rear of the main peloton. Mission Approved slowed things down as Tosen Jordan sat two lengths back, with another gap to rest. The 3-year-old colt Win Variation (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) made an audacious move heading into the far turn, and the pace quickened noticeably turning into the stretch. Mission Approved began to fade as Win Variation and then Tosen Jordan took a narrow lead, but Buena Vista, having split rivals, charged to the fore 100 meters and asserted for the stirring win as the Toyko crowd roared its approval. Danedream, produced wide in upper stretch, was unable to muster her typical turn of foot and never threatened.
???"She felt fantastic the whole way around," winning jockey Yasunari Iwata said. "I believed she was the strongest to the end, and she had enough to pull out ahead."
???Asked in the post-race press conference how he felt to see his mare avenge her DQ from a year ago, trainer Matsuda was emotional. "After last year and what Soumillon did..," he said before abruptly breaking off in a choked sob. His wife, Mineko Matsuda, said earlier, "It is so good she has won, so good. Last year had been so frustrating--so horribly frustrating." Buena Vista has now won six Group 1 events.
???Danedream's jockey Andrasch Starke could not hide his disappointment after the race. "We jumped a little bit slow and she got bumped soon after," he said. The outside draw didn't help. We may have been able to finish closer if I'd had more of an inside draw. [But Buena Vista] is really a good horse."

???Stoney Fleece was claimed by John Sadler, who trained the colt's dam to a win in the 1992 GIII Buena Vista H. and a second-place finish in the following year's GI Gamely S., from owner Richard Vasak and trainer Mike Puype for $40,000 out of a winning debut at Del Mar July 28. He rewarded his new connections with a starter allowance score the following month before finishing fifth in the I'm Smokin S. for Cal-Breds Sept. 5. The bay showed an immediate affinity for going long on the sod when annexing an open allowance at Santa Anita Oct. 15, and switched back to the main track in Arcadia last time to fill out the trifecta in the Oct. 29 Cal Cup Juvenile S. Stoney Fleece traveled in the second flight here as Handsome Mike and a pair of longshot foes ran off to battle through splits impossible of :22.45 and :45.12. Handsome Mike shook free from his pursuers at the head of the lane, but he was soon confronted by the fresh-legged Stoney Fleece. The speedster dug in gamely, but succumbed to Stoney Fleece's relentless charge in midstretch, and that one pulled clear late. Even-money choice Battle Force was left with too much to do, and he had to settle for third. "His mother was very good on grass," recalled Sadler. "I ran her here a mile and an eighth [in the Gamely] and Toussad (El Gran Senor) beat her--so I have some familiarity with the family. The other [siblings] got sent to other trainers, but when this one was in for a tag, it was like an old friend/family thing. I really claimed him for grass and he's two-for-two on turf. He's a nice hard-knocking horse."

???Maritimer strengthened his case for a Sovereign Award with another dominating display. Runner-up to Hard Not to Like (Hard Spun) in an allowance prep for the GIII Summer S. Aug. 26, the dark bay was a well-bet fourth in that Sept. 17 event itself, but put those efforts in the rear-view mirror with a good-looking victory over Menlo Castle in the Coronation Futurity over this track and trip Nov. 6. Favored in this unrestricted test, Maritimer was never far from the front, but was forced to cover ground four wide on the final bend. Grade One Service...
???
To Honor and Serve, a sharp winner of the GII Pennsylvania Derby two starts back Sept. 24, traded blows with Calibrachoa through a half mile in :45.61. Doing it well within himself, the handsome bay gained command in midstretch and was never seriously threatened by the late rally of Hymn Book. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott also campaigned the brilliant Cigar, who this race was renamed in honor of in 1997.

?? "It's been a great month," said Mott, still basking in the glow of Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor)'s upset win in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. "We've got no complaints." Mott continued, "He's been really eating up good and it didn't look like we hurt his feelings too much in the Classic. I thought he ran well in there and he came back very sound and feeling good. I think [one mile] is an ideal distance for him; I think he's a very fast horse as the 1:33 and change would indicate. Actually, I think he's put on a little bit of flesh since the Classic, if you could imagine that."

?? To Honor and Serve will be brought back for his 4-year-old campaign. "He's going to go home to Live Oak [in Florida] and rest for a little bit," Weber said. "After his rest he will go back to Billy [Mott] and we will figure out his campaign for next year."

Reigning juvenile filly champion Awesome Feather, sidelined by a suspensory injury for much of her sophomore campaign, was looking for the second Grade I victory of her career. Winner of last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies just two days before selling for $2.3 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, the bay filly took the Oct. 5 Le Slew S. in her first outing for Stronach Stables. Awesome Feather, the obvious class of this eight-horse field, raced keenly as she chased pacesetter Love and Pride through fractions of :24.93 and :48.97. She forged past that rival after three-quarters in 1:12.41 and powered clear under a hand ride. "I was a little nervous there, but she's a pro," admitted trainer Chad Brown. "She's got the heart of a champion. We just try to stay out of her way in the morning training her and just try to take care of her, day-to-day. She does the rest every day. It was a pretty special win." As for what is next for the champion, Brown added, "We've just been taking it day-by-day with her. As long as she's 100% healthy, we'll probably see her in the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream [Jan. 28]. That'd be the plan, but we're going to see how she is first, but if she's OK, that's where I'd go." Jockey Jeffrey Sanchez added, "She is unbelievable. She is little, but she is unbelievable. I didn't go to the lead, I sat there, took back. At the half-mile pole, I knew I was going to win the race. I had a lot of confidence in her."

???Gemologist rolled by five lengths in his Turfway debut Sept. 24, then passed his first two-turn test in a $75,000 optional claimer over track and trip Oct. 30. Sent off as the second choice to remain unbeaten here, the bay was forwardly placed in third through fractions of :23.98 and :47.49. With Javier Castellano aboard, Gemologist moved in tandem with "TDN Rising Star" Ever So Lucky while racing three wide on the turn for home, and outslugged the favorite to the wire to win going away. WinStar's Super Saver (Maria's Mon), a five-length winner in this event in 2009, returned the following spring to annex the GI Kentucky Derby. "Everyone's been talking about the Derby and it's very exciting to get the 'Derby fever,'" WinStar's Kenny Troutt revealed. "This race is a great stepping stone for us. I'll leave everything else up to [WinStar President] Elliot [Walden] and the trainer [Todd Pletcher]." Walden added, "He'll get a little bit of a breather and then we'll regroup and see where we go. I don't know if he'll come back to WinStar Farm [for the winter]. We'll have to figure that out."

O'Prado Again got it right in his fourth career attempt going nine furlongs in an off-the-turfer over the Keeneland Polytrack Oct. 28, and earned a trip to the big leagues here. Settled in midpack through a quarter mile in :24.38, he crept up closer down the backstretch, tugging his way to race in third following a half mile in :49.97. With Kent Desormeaux aboard, O'Prado Again was under a ride while holding his position at the top of the stretch, and came with a sustained rally down the lane to nail the pacesetter late. "I think he's a special horse," trainer Dale Romans said. "The further he goes, the better he gets. He was training so well that we thought he would run a big race, so we decided to run in the Remsen. Kent [Desormeaux] rode him with a lot of confidence." As for what's next Romans added, "We'll ship him to Florida and he probably won't race the rest of the year. There is a slim chance he could run at Hollywood [in the GI CashCall Futurity Dec. 17], but we will probably wait until next year. We think he is a Kentucky Derby horse so we will treat him like that." O'Prado Again continues to improve with racing experience. A debut sixth in a five-furlong affair in the Churchill slop June 18, he reported home a closer seventh when stretched out and switched to grass at Saratoga Sept. 3, then rallied to finish third on the Keeneland lawn Oct. 9. Desormeaux added, "He's a horse you can move into a spot and sit again, which is characteristic of a serious horse. He's got gears. He's silky smooth, like [Fusaichi Pegasus] was. You can't tell his feet hit the ground. He's really, really smooth."

???On Fire Baby, heroine of the GII Pocahontas S. over this strip Oct. 30, remained perfect on dirt with a tour-de-force here. Away from the stalls first, the gray was under a tight hold through a half mile in an easy :50.01, and set the stretch ablaze en route to a flashy victory. She becomes the seventh filly to pull off the Pocahontas/Golden Rod double. "You saw today how good she is and I think she's got plenty left in her," trainer Gary Hartlage said. "When she got away with that kind of a half, I didn't think she would get beat if she was the horse I thought she was and she did her thing. They let us walk like a dog and she's just that good. I've trained a couple of Grade II winners, but she's the best one I've ever had. In my opinion, she's one of the top three 2-year-old fillies in the country." Just how confident is Hartlage in his charge? "We're nominated to the Kentucky Oaks now and we'll also nominate her to the Kentucky Derby. I'm telling you, she is that good." Disposablepleasure, a double-digit maiden winner going 1 1/16 miles at third asking at Belmont last time Oct. 6, ran a remarkable race to get the money here. The gray stumbled badly at the start, and caboosed the field of 10 through a half mile in :48.31. With Ramon Dominguez aboard, she began to make an eye-catching move approaching the far turn, but was forced to hit the brakes in traffic. Disposablepleasure quickly regained her composure once again, split horses to gain the lead in the stretch and was all heart to get the money. "The only thing I thought [when she stumbled at the start] is maybe it's Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy) again," trainer Todd Pletcher recalled of the 2007 GI Belmont S. heroine, who also stumbled horribly when they sprung the latch. "That was bad to start with, but she really started her run on the turn, picked up some momentum, and had to stop again. It was a very courageous effort for any horse, but especially a 2-year-old filly. She's got a lot of natural ability, but she showed she's got some heart and desire to go along with it. For any horse to win and overcome all that first time going 1 1/8 miles was impressive, but you don't see too many 2-year-old fillies do that." Disposablepleasure debuted with a close fourth going two turns over the Saratoga lawn Aug. 14, then switched to dirt with a runner-up effort in a route at Monmouth Sept. 10.

???Pacific Ocean, purchased by Gary and Mary West for $300,000 as a 2008 Keeneland September yearling, opened his racing career with three straight victories before suffering his first loss with a runner-up effort in the May 21 GIII Hanshin H. He finished seventh in the July 20 Bold Venture S. at Woodbine in his final start fo the Wests and trainer Wayne Catalano. Purchased privately this summer and donning the black and yellow silks of Dennis and Mike Narlinger's JMJ Racing Stables for the first time here for trainer Mike Mitchell, the chestnut gelding was hustled to the lead from his inside post position and cut out fractions of :21.52 and :43.78. He opened a clear lead in upper stretch, completing the five furlongs in :55.66 and came home a confident winner. "It's a good thing I didn't talk to [jockey] Joel [Rosario], because I would have said just sit there and let everybody go," Mitchell said. "And here he's on the lead. That's why if you don't know anything, you don't say anything." Mitchell also trains GI Malibu S. contender Casper's Touch (Touch Gold) for the Narlingers. "The owners live in California [San Juan Capistrano] and they decided they wanted to run some horses, so they brought some here from back east," Mitchell continued. "They picked me out as a trainer and it worked out great." Irrefutable, who made a big move up the rail to gain the runner-up spot, collapsed and died after being unsaddled. "He was heading back and everything looked OK," reported trainer Bob Baffert. "He ran great. After he was unsaddled, he took about 10 steps. We thought he was having a heat stroke. He must have had a heart attack."
